The drop-top version of the most recognizable Ferrari shape, with a metal roof that folds away in seconds.
The Ferrari 488 Spider is a mid-engined, two-seat convertible supercar whose two-piece metal roof folds away in 14 seconds at up to 30 mph without ever touching the trunk. Renting one buys the most instant recognition in the fleet rather than rarity, so it goes out for proposals, weddings, and briefs that amount to a Ferrari with the roof down.
Torque builds in a rising wave rather than a single hit, and only an occasional turbo whoosh gives away how the power arrives. Ferrari's differential and Side Slip Angle Control keep an average driver composed, so the Ferrari 488 Spider leans toward the photograph and the moment.
The Ferrari 488 Spider leans toward the audience rather than the driver alone. It suits proposals, weddings, anniversary trips, and anyone whose brief is simply a Ferrari with the roof down. Ferrari's own electronic differential and Side Slip Angle Control let an average driver hold a small, tidy slide on a canyon road and look composed doing it, which makes the car forgiving for a renter who wants the photo and the moment more than a track day workout. Luggage capacity stays the same whether the roof is up or down, since the roof never shares space with the trunk, which suits a couple heading somewhere for the weekend.
Ferrari built the 488 in two road body styles and a track derived version of each, plus a one-make race car. Prometheus Exotics runs the 488 Spider, the open top version of the standard car.
The Ferrari 488 GTB is the fixed roof coupe and the entry point to the range. Its 3.9 liter twin turbo V8 makes 661 hp at 8,000 rpm, and at about 1,470 kg the GTB is the lightest road going 488. It suits a driver who does not need a folding roof, and it is not in our fleet.
The Ferrari 488 Spider is the car we run. It uses the same 661 hp V8, the same steering rack, and the same electronic differential as the GTB, and adds a folding hardtop that stows in 14 seconds. The roof lives in its own compartment, so trunk space stays the same whether the car is open or closed.
The 488 Pista is the track focused coupe, with 710 hp, roughly 90 kg cut out of the GTB, a titanium exhaust, and bodywork taken from Ferrari's own race cars. It is louder, stiffer, and far less forgiving on broken pavement than the Spider we run. We do not run a Pista. Ferrari built it for lap times.
The 488 Pista Spider is the open top Pista, carrying the same 710 hp V8 and the same aerodynamic package under a retractable hardtop. Ferrari built it in small numbers and it sits at the top of the road going 488 ladder. It is not in our fleet, and it was never tuned for comfort. Comfort was never the point.
The 488 Challenge and the later Challenge Evo are track only cars for Ferrari's one-make series. They run race electronics, no interior trim, a roll cage, and slick tires, and they carry no road registration. Neither can be rented anywhere, including here, because neither is legal on a public road. Ferrari sells them only to series entrants.
