A twin-turbo V8 in a compact coupe, with the burble the bigger AMGs are known for.
The Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 is a compact rear-wheel drive AMG with the same 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 family as the bigger AMG cars, making 503 hp and 516 lb-ft in S form. Renters book it for the V8 sound and the rear-wheel balance in a car this size, choosing it over a BMW M3 or M4 when they want 8 cylinders and a burble rather than 6.
The V8 pulls from low revs and in Sport+ the exhaust flaps open, so every lift and downshift crackles while the rear end loosens under your right foot. It is the car for a canyon morning or a birthday that is about the seat, with the look of a quiet grey coupe.
Mercedes sold the V8 AMG C63 as a sedan, a coupe and a cabriolet, each in standard and S output, and launched the range with an Edition 1 package. We run the S coupe in Edition 1 form.
The AMG C63 S Coupe is the car we run, in Edition 1 spec with matte grey paint, a yellow stripe over the hood and roof, yellow calipers and black wheels over a black cabin with yellow stitching. The 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 makes 503 hp and 516 lb-ft through a 7-speed wet-clutch gearbox and a locking differential. 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. 2 doors, 4 seats.
The AMG C63 Sedan is the 4-door entry point, with 469 hp and 479 lb-ft from the same twin-turbo V8, a 7-speed gearbox and 5 seats. It carries most of the S car's sound and speed with a mechanical limited-slip differential and fixed-rate dampers in place of the adaptive ones. We do not run the sedan.
The AMG C63 S Sedan has the same 503 hp and 516 lb-ft as our coupe, with the electronic locking differential and adaptive dampers, in a body with 4 doors, 5 seats and a full trunk. It is the one for 4 adults and their bags. We do not run the S sedan.
The AMG C63 Cabriolet is the soft-top version of the coupe, sold in both 469 hp and 503 hp S form. The fabric roof folds in about 20 seconds and the body carries extra bracing for the open top, so it weighs more and drives a little softer than our coupe. We do not run the cabriolet.
