The matte grey Mercedes-AMG C63 S Edition 1 Coupe with yellow stripes and the black and yellow-stitched interior is based in Los Angeles. This is the driver's car in our Mercedes lineup, a V8 sending 503 hp to the back wheels in a compact 2-door, booked for a canyon morning or a birthday that is about the seat, not the valet. It delivers across Los Angeles, Orange County and the Inland Empire.
Start with the engine. The 4.0L twin-turbo V8 sits a long way back under that hood, turbos tucked inside the V, the same family of engine that goes in the bigger AMGs in a car that weighs a lot less. 503 hp to the rear wheels only, through a 7-speed wet-clutch gearbox and a locking differential. In Comfort it is a quiet coupe with a firm ride. In Sport+ the exhaust flaps open, every downshift gets a crackle, and the rear end wants to move when you ask. 60 comes in 3.9 seconds. The seats hold you at the ribs. Take Topanga Canyon Boulevard from the Valley down to PCH on a weekday, in Sport, with the car doing the work through the bends and you keeping it on your side of the line.
Matte grey with yellow stripes photographs like a graphic. In direct sun the grey reads like wet concrete and the centre stripe over the hood and roof is the only saturated thing, so frame it dead centre from the front or the back. In open shade the grey takes a blue cast and the yellow calipers and wheel lips carry the colour. After dark the stripe still reads in headlights, the body does not. Take the head-on front with the stripe running straight up the hood. Shoot the yellow pinstripe on the wheel rim with the caliper behind it, close. These were taken on a lot, not on location. Put it against a painted wall on Melrose Avenue.
This is the only C-Class we run, and it is based in Los Angeles. It fills the slot for the renter who wants a V8 AMG that is compact, rear-wheel drive and 2 doors, in the Edition 1 spec that only came one way, stripes and all. At $595 a day it is the same rate as our AMG GT 63 four-door in LA, so the choice between them is seats and drive wheels, not money. The deposit is $1,000, refundable, the same as the GT 63.
This is the C63 S Coupe in Edition 1 form, the launch specification. The S brings 503 hp from the 4.0L twin-turbo V8, a 7-speed wet-clutch automatic, an electronic locking rear differential, adaptive dampers and rear-wheel drive. Edition 1 adds what you can see on this car, the matte designo grey paint, the yellow stripe over the hood and roof, yellow stripes along the sills, black wheels with a yellow pinstripe on the rim, yellow brake calipers, and inside, diamond-quilted AMG performance seats with yellow stitching, a flat-bottom Alcantara steering wheel with a yellow marker at 12 o'clock, AMG Edition 1 badging on the seats, and yellow-stitched floor mats. 4 seats, 2 doors.
