A quiet, air-sprung luxury SUV built for arriving somewhere formal without being misread.
The Range Rover is the luxury SUV every rival is measured against, built on a 395 hp turbocharged inline six with a 48 volt mild hybrid boost and flush door handles that present themselves as you approach. Renters book it for business travel and formal occasions where a flashier vehicle would send the wrong message, and chauffeur service is available.
The pull is a firm, quiet shove, and all-wheel steering turns the rear wheels opposite the fronts, shrinking a nearly 17 foot SUV down to something that turns around on a residential street. That suits freeway distance and a formal arrival more than a canyon road.
The Range Rover is booked by a renter who cannot afford to be misread, for business travel, family transport, and formal occasions where a flashier or more aggressive looking vehicle would send the wrong message. Long distance comfort bookings and formal transport lean on the Range Rover for a quiet, composed ride that still arrives with real presence, whatever the distance involved. Chauffeur service is available for renters who would rather be driven than drive themselves, which keeps the same SUV useful for both a business trip and a personal one. It also suits a renter who wants to drive the SUV personally rather than simply be delivered somewhere in it, since the cabin rewards the driver as much as the passengers.
Land Rover builds the full size Range Rover in a ladder of SE, HSE, Autobiography and SV, in standard and long wheelbase bodies, with the shorter Range Rover Sport alongside. Our fleet runs the SE and the Sport.
The Range Rover SE is the entry grade of the full size car and the version we run. It carries a 395 hp turbocharged inline-six, standard all-wheel steering and 20-way heated and ventilated front seats. In the seat it is the tallest and quietest car in this range, built for a formal arrival or a long highway drive where calm matters more than pace.
The Range Rover HSE sits one step above the SE and adds equipment rather than pace. Larger wheels, upgraded audio, additional driver assistance and a richer cabin specification are the substance of it, with the same inline-six available underneath. It is the middle of the range and the least distinctive rung on the ladder. We do not run the HSE.
The Range Rover Autobiography is the luxury grade, with semi-aniline leather, four zone climate control, a rear cabin upgrade with powered reclining seats, and a 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 available in place of the six. It is also the grade most often ordered on the long wheelbase body, where chauffeur service is available. We do not run it.
The Range Rover SV is the top of the range, built by Land Rover special vehicle division with bespoke materials, ceramic switchgear, a choice of four or five seat rear cabins, and the 606 hp version of the twin-turbo V8. Long wheelbase SV cars can be ordered with a rear centre console fridge and folding tables. We do not run it.
The Range Rover Sport is the shorter, lower sibling and the second Range Rover we run. It sits about 20 millimetres lower than the full size car and uses a stiffer structure, so it settles after a bump instead of floating on. Cornering is flatter and turn-in quicker, at some cost to the full size car cushioning.
