How It Drives
This is the full size Range Rover, the vehicle that created the luxury SUV category before anybody else had thought of it. 395 horsepower from a mild hybrid straight six, all wheel drive and sixty in 5.3 seconds, though the numbers are not what it is for. The ride is the achievement. Air suspension and a body designed around isolation make the freeway run out to Palm Springs feel shorter than it is, and the rear seats sit closer to a limousine bench than to an SUV row. All wheel steering shrinks the car around tight Newport Beach streets. It is one of the most comfortable vehicles we run.
How It Photographs
Black on the full size Range Rover is the most understated luxury vehicle we run, and its defining feature in a photograph is what is missing. The car has almost no visible detail, with flush glass, hidden handles, an almost unbroken tailgate and lighting that disappears into the bodywork when it is off. That simplicity photographs beautifully under controlled light and poorly in flat sun, so shoot it in the evening along the harbour at Newport Beach or under a hotel canopy near Fashion Island. The long side profile with the floating roof is the strongest single frame.
Why This One
The full size Range Rover, where our other two Land Rovers are the shorter Sport. More rear legroom, a taller seating position and a ride tuned entirely around isolation rather than handling set this car apart from both of them. It is one of the most comfortable vehicles we run, in or out of Orange County. Book it when the back seat matters and a Sport would be a compromise, or when the trip itself is long enough that quiet matters more than agility. Book a Sport instead when the driver is the priority and the extra two hundred dollars a day is not.

This is the Range Rover in its SE specification, the entry trim on the full size body, with the mild hybrid straight six tuned to 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft, sent through all wheel drive. Black paint covers a body on air suspension with all wheel steering standard, and the cabin is trimmed in black Windsor leather with 20 way heated and ventilated front seats. Five seats, four doors, tri zone climate and a panoramic roof. Massage seats and semi aniline leather belong to higher trims, not this one.
