Aston Martin DB11 Volante Rental in Los Angeles

The black Aston Martin DB11 Volante with the orange leather interior is based in Los Angeles. It is the car for the arrival that should look effortless, a dinner on Sunset Boulevard, a wedding exit, a coast drive with the roof folded and the orange seats open to the sky. People read the wings on the hood before they read anything else. It delivers across Los Angeles, Orange County and the Inland Empire.

THE DRIVE

How It Drives

The 4.0L twin-turbo V8 sits behind the front axle, so the long hood ahead of you is mostly empty and the car turns in lighter than its size suggests. Press the start button in the middle of the gear buttons and the V8 fires with a flare, then settles. The 8-speed automatic is a torque converter, smooth off the line, and in GT mode the Volante is a quiet cruiser with the roof up. Drop the roof, turn the dial to Sport, and the exhaust opens into a deep V8 note with a crackle on the overrun. 503 hp and rear-wheel drive mean the push builds rather than snaps, 0 to 60 in 4.1 seconds. Take it down Pacific Coast Highway through Malibu at a cruising pace, roof folded, and let the ocean air do the rest.

THE LOOK

How It Photographs

Black over bright orange is a contrast pairing, and it only works when the roof is down, so shoot it open. In direct sun the black paint goes glossy and reflects the sky, so wait for open shade or the last hour of light when the body reads as one long curve. The orange seats are the frame. Shoot from above the windscreen looking down into the cabin with both headrests in view. For the close detail, the black diamond-cut wheel against the thin tail light. After dark the orange leather glows under street light while the paint disappears. Shoot it at the Nobu Malibu valet lot at dusk, or on Rodeo Drive early on a weekend morning.

THE PICK

Why This One

This is the only DB11 we run, and the only Aston Martin convertible based in Los Angeles. Nothing else in the lineup gives you the wings on the hood with the roof off from a Los Angeles pickup. If you want an open 4-seat grand tourer with a V8 and a British badge, delivered in Beverly Hills or Malibu, this is the one car that does it. The orange interior is the reason to pick it over anything black inside. It shows in every photo.

THE BUILD

What's On This One

This is the Volante, the convertible DB11, with a fabric roof that folds in about 14 seconds and can be worked at up to 31 mph. It carries the 4.0L twin-turbo V8 with 503 hp, an 8-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive and the swan-wing doors that lift as they swing open. The body is black, the roof is black fabric, and the wheels are black diamond-cut multi-spokes. Inside it is bright orange leather on the seats, doors, dash top and centre console, with the Aston Martin wings embroidered in the headrests, a black steering wheel and dark trim across the dash. The seating is 2 plus 2, 2 proper seats up front and 2 small ones behind for a short hop.
