The dark grey BMW M3 Competition xDrive with the red interior is based in Los Angeles. It is the fast car you can bring 3 people to, a 503 hp sedan with 4 doors and a back seat that works, so the weekend in the canyons and the dinner in Beverly Hills happen in the same car. Strangers read a grey BMW. The red seats tell the rest. Delivery covers Los Angeles, Orange County and the Inland Empire.
All-wheel drive is the part you notice first. The M xDrive system is rear-biased and only sends power forward when the rear tyres slip, so the M3 puts all 503 hp down from a stop with no wheelspin. The 3.0L twin-turbo straight-6 is quiet at idle, which surprises people, and above about 2,500 rpm it pulls hard and smooth to 7,200 rpm with the real engine note amplified into the cabin. The 8-speed automatic is a torque converter, so it creeps through Sunset Boulevard traffic like any sedan. The ride is firm even in Comfort. Set the red M1 button to the calm setting and M2 to the sharp one, then press M2 as the road opens up on Angeles Crest Highway on a weekday morning. Turn-in is quick and accurate and the car stays flat and neutral.
Dark grey over red photographs best with the doors open. From outside it reads as a grey sedan with a big grille. In direct sun the metallic grey picks up the flared arches and the carbon roof shows its weave from above. In open shade the paint goes flat and the black wheels and red calipers carry the frame. After dark the red interior lights up under a street lamp. The frame to take is the front three-quarter with the driver's door open. The close detail is the red caliper behind the black wheel. These photos were shot in an industrial yard. In Los Angeles, shoot it in the Arts District or outside the studio gates in Culver City.
We run 5 other M3s and this is the only M3 Competition based in Los Angeles. The other Competitions are green over orange and grey over white in Orange County and white over red in San Diego, and the 2 CS cars are white at $695. If you want the red interior without crossing a county line, or the grey body that disappears into traffic until the doors open, this is the car. Same $495 a day as the other Competitions.
This is the M3 Competition with xDrive, which means 503 hp from the 3.0L twin-turbo inline-6, the 8-speed automatic in place of the manual, and all-wheel drive. The body is dark grey metallic with the carbon fibre roof, the quad tailpipes and the wide arches of the Competition. The wheels are gloss black with red brake calipers behind them. Inside it is red leather on the seats, doors and dash, the steering wheel with a red 12 o'clock marker and red paddles, and the curved display that joins the cluster and the centre screen. The slim headlights of the updated car sit at the front. 4 doors, 5 seats, a 13 cubic foot trunk.
