Corvette C8 Stingray Rental in Los Angeles

The red Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray with the black interior is based in Los Angeles. It is the first supercar for most people who book it, a mid-engine shape strangers call a Ferrari until they see the badge, at a price that makes the weekend possible. Pop the roof panel off, point it at the skyline, and it photographs like a car 3 times the price. You can have it brought to you in Los Angeles, Orange County and the Inland Empire.

THE DRIVE

How It Drives

You sit almost over the front wheels with the windscreen close and the 6.2L V8 a few feet behind your head. That is the first shock, and it makes the car feel smaller than it is. The V8 barks on a cold start, every C8 does, then the 8-speed dual-clutch takes a beat off the line and is quick from there. There is no turbo, so the throttle answers the moment you move your foot, 490 hp and 465 lb-ft with the push arriving right away. The steering is light and exact, go-kart quick. Pop the 3 latches, lift the roof panel into the trunk, and the V8 bellow comes straight in. Take it up Angeles Crest on a weekday for the sightlines, or run Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu with the panel off and the exhaust in Sport.

THE LOOK

How It Photographs

Torch red is the Corvette colour, and its busy surfaces show every crease in red. In direct sun it goes bright and flat, so shoot it in the late afternoon when the side vents throw shadows. In open shade the red deepens and the black wheels with the yellow calipers inside them become the detail. After dark red goes dark and the tail lights do the work. The frame to take is the front three-quarter with the roof panel off and the skyline behind, as these photos were, shot at the Elysian Park overlook above downtown Los Angeles. The close detail is the black seats from above through the open roof. Shoot it there in the last hour before sunset.

THE PICK

Why This One

We run 11 other C8s and this is the only Stingray based in Los Angeles, and the only red Stingray coupe. The other Stingrays are black, grey and white in Orange County, the Inland Empire and Palm Springs from $395 to $495, the red convertible is in San Diego, and the other Los Angeles Corvette is the blue Z06 at $595. If you want red, the roof off and the city in the background, with the car already here, this is the one. $495 a day.

THE BUILD

What's On This One

This is the Stingray coupe with the removable roof panel, so it runs open like a targa and the panel stores in the rear trunk. The engine is the 6.2L V8 with 490 hp and 465 lb-ft, mid-mounted under glass behind the seats, with the 8-speed dual-clutch and rear-wheel drive. The body is red with gloss black wheels, yellow brake calipers and the rear spoiler. Inside it is black leather with the square-bottom steering wheel, the digital cluster, the centre screen and the wall of buttons that divides the cabin. 2 seats, 2 doors, 12.6 cubic feet of luggage split between a frunk that takes 1 carry-on and a rear trunk that takes 2, or the roof panel.
