The black Ferrari 488 GTB with the tan cuoio leather interior is based in San Diego. It is the Ferrari shape everyone knows, in the colour almost nobody rents it in, with a fixed roof and 661 hp from the twin-turbo V8. Book it for the closing dinner in La Jolla, the anniversary drive up the coast or the day you finally get the badge. Delivery runs through San Diego, Orange County and the Inland Empire.
The 3.9 liter twin-turbo V8 sits behind your head and it does not feel turbocharged. Ferrari maps the torque by gear, so in 1st, 2nd and 3rd the surge arrives only as you reach for the redline, and in the higher gears all of it lands at once. 661 hp, 0 to 60 in 3.0 seconds. The 7-speed dual-clutch is instant on the paddles and a little lurchy in a parking lot, which is normal. The steering is fast and light, so the first corner comes sooner than you expect. Press the bumpy road button on the wheel and the dampers soften without touching the manettino. Take it up Torrey Pines Road past the Gliderport to the Mount Soledad overlook. In Sport the exhaust valves open and the V8 climbs the hill with the cove below you.
Black over tan is the quiet Ferrari. In direct sun the paint turns into a mirror and the coast ends up reflected in the doors, so shoot it with the sun low and behind you. In open shade the body goes to soft charcoal and the side intake finally shows. After dark the yellow calipers behind the black 5-spoke wheels are the only colour in the frame. Open a door in every exterior shot for the tan cuoio leather. Shoot the caliper through the spokes close, and the yellow nose badge. These photos were taken on a cliff road above the ocean on the San Diego coast at sunset, and Torrey Pines Road above the Gliderport gives the same light.
We run 4 cars from the 488 family and this is the only GTB, the only coupe. The other 3 are 2 Spiders and a Pista, all based in Los Angeles or Orange County, in grey, white and red. This is the only 488 in San Diego, the only black one, and the only one with the tan interior. The fixed roof is the trade, lighter and quieter than a Spider at freeway speed, with the V8 coming through the firewall instead of over your shoulder. $1,395 a day.
This is the 488 GTB, the fixed-roof coupe. Standard on it is the 3.9 liter twin-turbo V8 with 661 hp, the 7-speed dual-clutch, carbon ceramic brakes, the manettino on the wheel with the bumpy road button, Side Slip Control, the central rev counter with 2 screens either side, and everything else on the wheel, indicators included. On this car the paint is black, the wheels are black 5-spoke, and the brake calipers are yellow. Inside it is tan cuoio leather on the seats, doors and dash, the prancing horse stitched into the headrests, a 488 GTB plaque on the passenger side, and the yellow shield in the center of the wheel. 2 seats, rear-wheel drive.
