THE DRIVE

How It Drives

The 4.7 liter V8 is naturally aspirated and built at Ferrari's plant in Maranello, and it is the reason to book this car over anything turbocharged. Nothing happens until you ask, then it climbs to 7,000 rpm with the sound getting harder the whole way. 454 hp through a 6-speed automatic to the rear wheels, with long paddles fixed to the column so they are always where you left them. Press Sport and the exhaust valves open. The fabric roof folds in under 30 seconds, so drop it at the first light. The car is long and heavy and it rides like it, settled and calm at 40 mph. Take it down Highway 101 through Del Mar and Solana Beach at sunset in Sport, second gear, and let the V8 do the talking past the surf shops.

THE LOOK

How It Photographs

White over a white and black cabin is the pairing. In direct sun the white goes flat and bright and the black wheels and red calipers become the outline of the car. In open shade it picks up blue from the sky and the long hood shows its curve. After dark, top down, the white seats glow under any light. The frame to take is the rear three-quarter with the top down, so the 4 trident headrests show over the deck. Shoot the red caliper inside the black wheel close, and the trident stitched into a headrest. These photos were taken on the San Diego bayfront with the skyline and the sailboats behind, and that is where to shoot it.

THE PICK

Why This One

Book it for the sunset run down the coast or the wedding exit at the Hotel del Coronado.

THE BUILD

What's On This One

This is the GranTurismo Sport Convertible, the open 4-seater with the 4.7 liter naturally aspirated V8, 454 hp, a 6-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive and a power fabric top. The Sport trim brings the deeper front bumper, the Sport exhaust with its valves, the sport steering wheel and the sport seats as standard. It rides on gloss black wheels with red brake calipers, and it carries the trident grille, the 3 vents in each front fender and the quad exhaust tips at the back.
