How It Drives
690 horsepower in this Spider, the strongest tune McLaren has put in the Artura chassis, from the same twin turbo V6 and electric motor pairing as the coupe. The open roof gets you closer to a soundtrack that is genuinely different from anything Italian, higher pitched and more mechanical than a V8, and because the electric motor fills the bottom of the rev range the car pulls hard from low speed the moment the engine lights. Sixty arrives in 3.0 seconds. Take the coast road through Laguna Beach with the roof down and the rear window dropped and the V6 is suddenly the loudest thing on Pacific Coast Highway, which is not what anyone expects from a hybrid.
How It Photographs
Satin black paint does not throw back light the way gloss does, so this Artura's surfacing and its dihedral door line stay visible even in flat daylight, which makes it the easiest dark McLaren in the fleet to shoot at midday. Pull off along the Laguna Beach coast road and the ocean behind it reads as texture rather than glare competing with the paint. Roof down, the red cabin becomes the only saturated colour in the frame, and the contrast against satin black is the image this car is booked for. Shoot the doors up with the roof stowed at the same time, and keep it out of an automatic wash, satin paint cannot be polished or waxed like a normal finish.
Why This One
This is our only open McLaren hybrid, and the satin black finish over red is a paint choice nothing else in our fleet wears. It makes slightly more power than our Artura Coupe, 690 horsepower against 671, and the roof is the real reason to take it over that car. A hybrid V6 sounds nothing like the V8s in the rest of our McLaren row, higher and more mechanical, and with the roof stowed on Laguna Beach's coast road you actually hear it properly. Take the coupe instead if a closed roof and slightly more luggage room matter more to the trip than the sound.

A 3.0 liter twin turbo V6 and an electric motor combine for 690 horsepower and 531 lb-ft sent to the rear wheels through an eight speed dual clutch gearbox with electric-only reverse. The roof is a single piece retractable hardtop that stows in eleven seconds, and this car carries the current Artura generation's standard wireless phone charging and CarPlay. There is a 160 liter front compartment and no rear shelf once the roof is down.
