THE DRIVE

How It Drives

Drop the red top first. It is fabric, it folds in about 11 seconds and it works at low speed, so do it leaving the hotel. Then press the start button and the 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 fires with a boom and settles into a burble that does not stop, even in Comfort. 550 hp, 3.6 seconds to 60, through a 7-speed dual-clutch mounted at the back axle, so the car sits balanced and the nose goes where you point it. The GT C has the wider rear body and the rear-axle steering from the GT R, which makes a long car feel short in a tight turn. Sport+ opens the exhaust flaps. Cross the Coronado Bridge with the top down in Sport+, bay on both sides, and the V8 comes back off the concrete.

THE LOOK

How It Photographs

Satin silver with a red fabric top reads 2 ways. Top down, it is a low silver wedge with red calipers inside dark wheels. Top up, the red roof is the subject and the silver goes quiet under it. In direct sun the satin takes no glare and every panel reads as a single flat tone. In open shade it goes to a cool pewter. After dark the skyline lights sit on it without reflecting. The frame to take is the front three-quarter, top down, grille toward you, skyline across the water. Shoot the red top close from the rear quarter. These photos were taken on the San Diego bayfront, and that is where to shoot it.

THE PICK

Why This One

This is the only open-top AMG GT we run. The other AMG GT based in San Diego is the Hightech Silver GT 43 coupe at $995 a day, the newer 2+2 with the 4-cylinder hybrid. This one is $895 a day, 2 seats, a V8 and a top that folds. The satin silver with the red roof is a pairing no other AMG we run carries. If the booking is about the sound and the open air, this is the one. If it is the client day, book the 43.

THE BUILD

What's On This One

This is the AMG GT C Roadster, the 2-seat open car from the first AMG GT family. The C brings the GT R's wider rear body, rear-axle steering, the electronically controlled limited-slip differential and the AMG performance exhaust as standard, with 550 hp from the 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 and a 7-speed dual-clutch transaxle. This car is satin silver designo magno paint over a black cabin, with a red fabric power top, red brake calipers behind dark cross-spoke wheels, the Panamericana grille, the digital cluster and the center screen with AMG Dynamic Select. Inside, black leather, a flat-bottomed AMG wheel with suede-style grips and carbon-look trim on the console. 2 seats, rear-wheel drive.
