THE DRIVE

How It Drives

Start with the drivetrain. This SL puts its 577 hp through all 4 wheels, so the first corner out of the lot feels planted rather than loose, and the rear wheels steer, which shrinks a long car in a tight driveway. Then the V8, the 4.0L twin-turbo with the turbos between the banks, deep at idle and sharp when you lean on it. The wet-clutch 9-speed launches firm and snaps its shifts in Sport+. The fabric roof folds in about 15 seconds and works at low speed, so you drop it at the first red light on Ocean Avenue. You sit low behind a long hood, and at 60 you can still talk. Take PCH north from Santa Monica through Malibu at the posted pace and let the exhaust crack on every lift. Comfort is softer than the shape suggests.

THE LOOK

How It Photographs

Matte Spectral Blue takes no reflections, so the SL reads as one solid shape from every angle. In direct sun it goes powdery and almost light blue on top, and the yellow calipers behind the black wheels become the hot point in the frame. In open shade it drops to navy. After dark it is the darkest car in the lot, so shoot it under white light. Take the high front three-quarter with the roof down, long hood and 2+2 cabin in one frame. Shoot the yellow caliper close through the black spokes. These were taken on a rooftop deck in Los Angeles, and a top deck at golden hour, roof down, is still the spot.

THE PICK

Why This One

This is the only SL we run, and it is based in Los Angeles. Every other AMG GT we have is a 4-door with a roof, a 2-seat coupe, or the GT C Roadster down in San Diego at $895. The SL is the one with the open top and a back row in the same car, so a Malibu dinner for 3 works. At $895 a day it sits $300 above the GT 63 four-door in LA, the price of the roof. The deposit is $1,000, refundable.

THE BUILD

What's On This One

This is the AMG SL 63, the all-wheel-drive roadster with 4 seats. 4.0L twin-turbo V8, 577 hp, AMG 4Matic+, a wet-clutch 9-speed, rear-axle steering and a fabric soft top that folds in about 15 seconds. On this car the paint is matte Spectral Blue magno over gloss black multi-spoke AMG wheels with yellow brake calipers. The top is black. Inside it is black leather front and rear, the tilting portrait centre screen, a digital cluster behind an AMG steering wheel with drive-mode dials on the rim, and carbon fibre trim across the console. 2 full seats in front and 2 short ones behind them. 2 doors.
