THE DRIVE

How It Drives

The gearbox is at the back. The 3.8 liter twin-turbo V6 sits up front, a carbon driveshaft runs to the 6-speed dual-clutch transaxle behind you, and a second shaft runs forward again to drive the front wheels, so at idle you hear whirring and clicking that most cars hide. That is the mechanism, not a fault. 565 hp, 2.9 seconds to 60, and the all-wheel drive means the launch is a shove with no wheelspin. The steering is hydraulic. The brakes are big steel Brembos with a firm pedal and easy modulation, the friendliest pedal in a car this fast. 3 toggles on the console set the gearbox, the dampers and the stability control. Leave them in Comfort on the 5. Flip the dampers to R for Sunrise Highway up to Mount Laguna, where the grip is the story.

THE LOOK

How It Photographs

Bayside Blue is a bright blue with a hint of purple, the colour the GT-R name is tied to. In direct sun it goes electric and the black wheels, black mesh grille and red calipers become the outline. In open shade it deepens toward royal blue and the hood vents show as shadows. After dark it reads as navy, so shoot this one in daylight. The frame to take is the front three-quarter, low, with the mesh grille and the hood vents filling the corner. Shoot the red caliper inside the black wheel close. These photos were taken in a palm-lined lot. Put it on the Coronado Bridge approach, or in front of the Hotel del Coronado.

THE PICK

Why This One

This is the only GT-R we run and the only Nissan in the lineup. It is the all-wheel-drive launch car with a normal brake pedal and 4 seats, at $795 a day with a $1,000 deposit. Against the AMG GT 43 in San Diego at $995, it is the car for the drive rather than the arrival. Against our 2 McLaren Spiders here, it is the one you can hand to a nervous first-timer without a briefing on doors or parking brakes.

THE BUILD

What's On This One

This is the GT-R Premium, the late GT-R with the honeycomb mesh grille. The 3.8 liter twin-turbo V6 is hand-assembled in Yokohama by a single Takumi engine builder whose name sits on a plaque under the hood, 565 hp, a 6-speed dual-clutch transaxle, ATTESA all-wheel drive, Bilstein adaptive dampers and Brembo brakes. The Premium trim brings the 11-speaker Bose system, active noise cancellation and the titanium exhaust. This car is Bayside Blue over a black cabin, with gloss black forged wheels, red brake calipers, the black mesh grille, hood vents and the fixed rear wing. 2 doors, 4 seats, with the rear pair for bags or small kids.
