Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet Rental in Los Angeles

The black Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet with the Bordeaux red interior and red soft top is based in Los Angeles. It's the 911 for the evening out, the anniversary dinner, the drive up the coast where you want to be read as someone who belongs rather than someone who rented. The red roof over black is the detail the valet notices first. It serves Los Angeles, Orange County and the Inland Empire.

THE DRIVE

How It Drives

Start with the gearbox. The 8-speed PDK creeps away from a stop like a normal automatic, shifts without a gap, and only becomes a sports car gearbox when you pull a paddle. That's what makes this the easiest 911 to take into West Hollywood traffic on a Friday night. The 3.0 twin-turbo flat-six behind you makes 379 hp and pulls from 1,700 rpm in one long shove, with the whoosh of the turbos under the exhaust note. Hold the roof button and the red top folds in about 12 seconds, and it works at up to 31 mph. The steering is light at parking speed and firms up as you go. First 10 minutes, the Sunset Strip from Doheny to Laurel Canyon, roof down, at cruising pace. It's an arrival street, not a performance road, and this car fits it.

THE LOOK

How It Photographs

Black over Bordeaux red, with a red fabric roof and silver wheels. Black 911s all look alike until this one puts its top up. In direct sun black turns into a mirror and the red interior becomes the subject, so shoot from above the door line, top down, seats in frame. In open shade the black goes deep and the red roof pops. After dark it needs light on the red or it disappears. Take the rear three-quarter, top down, red cabin over the black deck. Shoot the red steering wheel close. For a Los Angeles set, a Downtown parking structure at dusk, or the driveway of the Beverly Hills Hotel with the roof up.

THE PICK

Why This One

We run 3 Carrera Cabriolets. The blue one in Orange County is $395 and the Crayon one in San Diego is $595 with this same red roof and cabin. This is the only one based in Los Angeles, and the only one in black over red, a pairing most people have never seen on a 911 and one that works at night, where this car spends its best hours. Same $595 as our Carrera T and Targa 4 GTS here, and the only full soft top of the 3.

THE BUILD

What's On This One

This is the base Carrera in Cabriolet form. Standard on it is the 3.0 twin-turbo flat-six with 379 hp, the 8-speed PDK, adaptive dampers, staggered 19 and 20-inch wheels, Wet Mode and the fabric roof with a glass rear window and a power wind deflector. This one is black with a Bordeaux red soft top, a full Bordeaux red interior, seats, dash, door panels and steering wheel, and silver wheels. The cabin has the centre analogue tach, the small toggle shifter and the wide centre screen. 4 seats, 2 small ones in back. Rear-wheel drive. 0 to 60 in 4.0 seconds, 183 mph.
