Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS Rental in Los Angeles

The black Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS with the black interior is based in Los Angeles. It's the 911 with the glass rear window that lifts and the fabric panel that folds under it, 473 hp and all-wheel drive, so it's the open-air 911 for the person who wants the sky without the full convertible and wants the grip on a damp coast morning. Black on black with red calipers is the quiet spec. It reaches Los Angeles, Orange County and the Inland Empire.

THE DRIVE

How It Drives

The roof is a show. Press the button and the whole glass rear window lifts and swings back, the fabric panel folds under it, and the glass settles down, about 19 seconds, only at a stop. People in the next car watch. Open, the Targa bar behind you keeps the cabin calmer than a full convertible at freeway speed. Then the rest. The 3.0 twin-turbo flat-six makes 473 hp and all 4 wheels put it down, so from a light on a cold morning it just hooks up and goes. The sport exhaust is standard and loud under load. The PDK is quick on the paddles and the suspension sits 10 mm lower than a Carrera. Where it lands is PCH north of Santa Monica with the roof open and the marine layer burning off over Malibu.

THE LOOK

How It Photographs

Black over black, on black wheels, with the black Targa bar and red calipers. The roof is the frame. Shoot it mid-fold, with the glass lifted and the panel folding, like the first of these photos, because no other 911 does that. In direct sun black goes to mirror, so get low and let the bar cut the reflection. In open shade the red calipers are the only colour. After dark it needs a lit background, a hotel entrance or a parking roof with the city behind. Take the rear three-quarter with the spoiler raised. Shoot the red caliper behind the black spoke close. In Los Angeles, a parking roof in Pasadena with the San Gabriels behind, late afternoon.

THE PICK

Why This One

This is the only Targa we run, in any trim. Our other open 911 in Los Angeles is the black Carrera Cabriolet at $595, and the rest of the open cars are in San Diego and Orange County. Same $595 as the Cabriolet and the Carrera T, and this is the one with 473 hp and all-wheel drive under a roof that still closes to a glass coupe. It's also the quietest spec of the 3, black on black, for someone who doesn't want the car to be the subject.

THE BUILD

What's On This One

The Targa 4 GTS is the open-roof GTS with all-wheel drive. Standard on it is the 3.0 twin-turbo flat-six with 473 hp, the 8-speed PDK, Sport Chrono with the mode dial, sport suspension 10 mm lower, the sport exhaust, the bigger brakes with red calipers, black trim in place of chrome, 20 and 21-inch centre-lock wheels in black, and the Targa roof with the lifting glass rear window. This one is black with the black Targa bar and a black leather interior with the centre analogue tach and the toggle shifter. 4 seats, 2 small ones in back. 0 to 60 in 3.3 seconds, 190 mph.
