THE DRIVE

How It Drives

The gearbox does the launch. Left foot on the brake, dial to Sport Plus, floor it, let go, and the 8-speed PDK and the all-wheel drive put 640 hp into the road with no wheelspin at all. 0 to 60 in 2.7 seconds, top down, and the passenger's head goes back into the seat. Reviewers call it violent and they are right. Below that the 3.8 liter twin-turbo flat-six waits until about 3,500 rpm, then the turbos kick and everything in the distance arrives. The rear wing rises on its own at speed. The brakes are carbon ceramic behind the yellow calipers and they do not care what temperature they are. In Normal it is calm enough for the airport. Take it over the Coronado Bridge in Sport, top down, the bay below and the Hotel del Coronado ahead.

THE LOOK

How It Photographs

Black over black with tan stitching is the stealth spec, and the wide body is the only thing that gives it away. In direct sun the paint goes to a mirror and the yellow calipers inside the centre-lock wheels are the one colour in the frame, so shoot low. In open shade the hips and the side intakes show as shape. After dark it is the light bar, the yellow calipers and the tan stitching under the cabin light. The frame to take is the rear three-quarter, top down, wing up. Shoot the yellow caliper behind the centre-lock nut close. These photos were taken on the San Diego bayfront with the skyline behind, and that is still the spot.

THE PICK

Why This One

Black over black with tan stitching is the stealth spec, and the wide body, the yellow calipers and the rising wing are the only giveaways. The Turbo S is the open all-wheel-drive top of the 911 line, 640 hp, carbon ceramic brakes and a launch that puts a passenger's head into the seat in 2.7 seconds. 4 seats and a frunk for 2 bags. Based in San Diego, delivering to Orange County and the Inland Empire, at $995 a day with a $2,000 deposit.

THE BUILD

What's On This One

This is the Turbo S Cabriolet, the open all-wheel-drive top of the 911 line. The 3.8 liter twin-turbo flat-six makes 640 hp, with an 8-speed PDK, carbon ceramic brakes with yellow calipers, rear-axle steering, active anti-roll bars, Sport Chrono with the dash-top stopwatch, 18-way sport seats, 20-inch front and 21-inch rear centre-lock wheels and the active front spoiler and rear wing as standard on this trim. This car is black over a black leather cabin with tan contrast stitching across the seats, the dash and the doors. Turbo S script on the tail, the wide body with the side intakes ahead of the rear wheels, a black fabric roof and 4 seats with the rear pair in place.
