THE DRIVE

How It Drives

There is no start-up. You tug the steel handle, step back while the car opens the door for you, settle into the ivory seat, hold the brake and the door closes itself. Then nothing. No idle, no hum, the climate control is the loudest thing in the cabin. Press the pedal and 2 electric motors deliver 577 hp and all of their torque from a standstill, 0 to 60 in 4.4 seconds, without drama. The steering is light and quick for a car this long, and the rear axle steers too. The suspension reads the road ahead and frees the anti-roll bars in a straight line, so potholes disappear. Take it across the Coronado Bridge at dusk in silence, the bay below and the Hotel del Coronado ahead. That is the drive it was built for.

THE LOOK

How It Photographs

Salamanca Blue over ivory reads as a commission, not a stock spec. In direct sun the blue goes bright and the grille and the Spirit of Ecstasy flare against it. In open shade the paint deepens to navy and the ivory cabin becomes the light in the frame. After dark the grille is lit from behind and the starlight headliner glows over the ivory seats. The frame to take is the side profile with the coach door open. Shoot the RR centre cap close, and the embroidered headrest. These photos are studio work, not local. Put it in the drive of the Hotel del Coronado, or outside La Valencia on Prospect Street in La Jolla.

THE PICK

Why This One

Salamanca Blue over an ivory cabin with blue trim reads as a bespoke commission from the curb, with the ivory as the light in every frame. It is the electric Rolls Royce, 577 hp from 2 motors with no sound, coach doors that open and close themselves and a starlight headliner over all 4 seats. Based in San Diego, so the Hotel del Coronado and La Jolla are local deliveries, and it reaches Orange County and the Inland Empire. $2,595 a day with a $5,000 deposit.

THE BUILD

What's On This One

This is the Spectre, the first electric Rolls Royce, with 2 motors, 577 hp, all-wheel drive, rear-axle steering, the widest coach doors in production that power open and close, and the lit grille as standard. This car is Salamanca Blue over an ivory leather cabin with blue trim, RR monograms embroidered in the headrests, open-pore wood across the dash and the doors, deep lambswool carpet underfoot and a starlight headliner over all 4 seats. It rides on dark multi-spoke wheels with the self-righting RR centre caps. 2 doors, 4 seats, a Power Reserve gauge in place of a tach, and no engine anywhere in it.
