Sixt Luxury Car Rental vs an Exotic Rental Agency

Sixt luxury car rental gets you a new German car from a class, and the class decides which car you drive. Its California page shows four luxury classes from LAX, and the biggest is a Fullsize Elite, which is a BMW X5 or similar. An exotic rental agency books one exact car instead, like a white Lamborghini Huracan Spyder at $1,195 a day.

Both are reasonable ways to rent a nice car, but they answer different questions. Sixt answers which class you need for the trip, and we answer which car you want waiting when the valet opens your door.

What Sixt puts in its luxury class

Sixt sorts its luxury cars into classes with names like Fullsize Elite and Standard Elite. From LAX, the page shows four of them. The Fullsize Elite is a BMW X5 or similar, and the Standard Elite is a BMW X3 or similar. Two Intermediate Elite classes show a BMW 2 Series sedan and a BMW X1. Sixt also says its cars average less than three months old. That counts in its favor, because a tired rental spoils a trip.

Those are clean, comfortable cars for a week of meetings. Picture the X5 pulling into a client lunch in Irvine. The X5 parks, the doors close, and the valet hands you a ticket without looking back. Now picture the grey G63 in that same spot. It rents for $695 a day. The side pipes tick as they cool, and the valet stays close to it instead of rushing off with the key.

Sixt exotic car rental and what the word means

Sixt uses the word exotic on its luxury pages. The cars it names there are a Cadillac Escalade, a Chevrolet Suburban, and a Ford Mustang Shelby GT. It also says its fleet has a large selection of Audi, Porsche, and Mercedes-Benz models. The page names no Lamborghini.

That gap matters if you searched for a Sixt exotic car rental and pictured a V10. The white Huracan Spyder makes 610 hp from a 5.2 liter V10 with no turbos. It has all-wheel drive and reaches 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. The fabric roof folds in 17 seconds, and you can lower it while rolling at low speed. Drive the Spyder out of Palm Springs Airport with the roof down. The black and red cabin sits open in the middle of the white body, and people at the curb pull out their phones.

A class versus one named car

Sixt is clear about how its classes work, and its luxury page says you receive a car in the category you booked. You generally can't choose the exact model. Sixt does offer guaranteed models. Its app also gives you a chance to choose your car 30 minutes before pickup.

That system keeps a large operation moving, and it works for most trips. It works less well when the car itself is the reason for the trip. A birthday dinner in Newport Beach is a good example. You want the car from the photo, in the color from the photo, waiting where you said. Picture the white Huracan idling at the valet stand with its roof already down.

Our pages work the other way. Each car has its own page with its own rate, deposit, and mileage rate. The Chalk 911 Carrera T is one specific car, a 2023 with a black cabin. It rents for $595 a day. It sits 10 mm lower than a standard Carrera, and the rear seats are gone to save weight. The sport exhaust comes standard, so the flat-six sounds deeper the moment it starts. Cars do move around in this business. So we confirm the exact car on your dates before you pay anything.

Age, license, and the checks before the key

Sixt's luxury pages list its own rules for the US, and you meet them before you get behind the wheel. You need to be 25 or older, and you need to have held your license for at least one year. Sixt also asks for a credit card. Its California page adds that some classes carry a higher minimum age and may add an underage driver fee.

We rent to anyone 18 or older. You need a valid license and full coverage insurance in your own name, and a larger deposit may apply under 25. That is the whole list.

So a 22 year old can't book a Sixt luxury class at all. The same driver can book the white Stingray here at $495 a day. It's a 2022 with a black cabin and a 490 hp V8 behind the seats. Pull up to a dinner in Santa Monica, and strangers often guess Ferrari before they see the badge.

Insurance is where the two systems split

Sixt's California page says you don't have to buy its protection packages. You can buy them at the counter to lower what you owe if something happens. That choice happens before you ever see the car.

We don't sell insurance, and the rental price doesn't include it. Your own policy has to carry non-owner vehicle coverage. That means your coverage extends to a car that isn't listed on your declarations page. Before every rental, we call your carrier and speak with an agent on a recorded line. We confirm the policy is active and covers a rental, and we also confirm it has no exotic or high-value exclusion.

Credit card rental coverage almost never helps with these cars, because most card benefits stop at vehicles worth $50k to $75k. Nobody enjoys this part, but it's finished before the car leaves for your address. When the grey G63 arrives, nobody is on hold with an insurance company in your driveway.

Sixt luxury car rental and where the car meets you

Sixt has branches at every major airport in California and downtown branches in the big cities. Worldwide, it lists more than 2,000 stations in over 105 countries. You walk to a counter or open the app, and then you walk out to the car.

We deliver across Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, the Inland Empire, and Palm Springs. That includes hotels, homes, offices, and the curb at LAX, SNA, BUR, LGB, ONT, SAN, and PSP. We quote the delivery fee by address. So you can land at LAX on a Friday night and find the white Huracan Spyder waiting outside arrivals. From there, take the Huracan up the coast to Malibu with the roof down.

The numbers on the four cars in this post

Here are the four cars, with figures from each car's own page.

  • White Lamborghini Huracan Spyder, $1,195 a day, $1,000 deposit, $5 a mile past the allowance, 610 hp, 0 to 60 in 3.4 seconds
  • Grey Mercedes-Benz G63, $695 a day, $1,000 deposit, $3 a mile past the allowance, 577 hp, seats five
  • Chalk Porsche 911 Carrera T, $595 a day, $1,000 deposit, $3 a mile past the allowance, 379 hp, 0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds
  • White Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray, $495 a day, $1,000 deposit, $4 a mile past the allowance, 490 hp, 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds

Sixt takes a deposit at pickup and returns it after the car comes back. Ours is a hold on your card, not a charge, and we release it once the car returns the way it left. Every car includes 100 miles a day, and a longer rental pools those miles together. So a 3 day rental gives you 300 miles to use however you like.

The rate also drops on its own as the rental gets longer. Rentals of 3 to 4 days take 10% off. Five to 6 days take 15% off. Seven to 13 days take 20% off. Three days in the G63 costs $2,085 before the discount. After the discount, it costs $1,876.50. That price includes 300 miles for the climb out of Palm Springs, with the V8 pulling hard up every grade.

When Sixt is the better call

Sixt is a sensible fit for a lot of trips. A family that needs a newer SUV for a week does well with a Fullsize Elite. A one-way drive between two cities is easier with a company that has branches at both ends. Sixt also serves cities we don't, and we can't match that reach.

The choice changes when the car is part of the plan. A 911 Carrera T on a weekday morning in Malibu is a different day than a BMW X3 on the same road. The class gets you to the destination, but the named car is the reason you went.

Book a class when the trip is the point. Book a named car when the car is the point, and confirm it before you pay.
