A five-seat luxury SUV built around a snarling twin-turbo V8 and a hand-trimmed cabin.
The Bentley Bentayga is Bentley's five-seat SUV on a 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 making 542 hp, and ours is the S, the performance specification with a factory sports exhaust the standard car does not have. It gets booked for road trips, ski runs and group dinners, by renters who want a Bentley they can live out of for a week rather than an afternoon.
The steering and brake pedal both carry more weight than you expect from an SUV, which makes a 2.4-tonne car feel controllable rather than remote, and the anti-roll system locks the body flat within half a second. That suits a multi-day drive more than a single arrival photo.
The Bentley Bentayga is the practical Bentley, and the bookings reflect that plainly. Airport transfers where the guest wants to drive, multi-day road trips, ski and desert runs, and group dinners for four or five adults after a full day behind the wheel are the typical bookings we see. Five seats, a usable boot, and a turning circle close to a compact hatchback's mean it is the only Bentley that works for a dog, a stroller, or a full set of golf clubs alongside passengers. It gets booked for the day itself far more often than for a single arrival photo outside a hotel.
Bentley builds the Bentayga as a five seat luxury SUV in two wheelbases and several grades, from the standard V8 through the S, the Azure, the Speed and the long wheelbase cars. Our fleet runs the Bentayga S.
The standard Bentayga V8 is the entry point to the range. It carries a 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 making 542 hp, an eight-speed automatic, all-wheel drive and three-chamber air suspension. Chrome brightwork and wood veneer set the interior tone, and the exhaust is tuned for quiet. It is the softest and most restrained Bentayga Bentley sells, and we do not run it.
The Bentayga S is the version in our fleet. It shares the 542 hp V8 with the standard car, so outright pace is identical, but a sports exhaust with fewer baffles adds pops and grumbles on the overrun, sport damper tuning firms the body control, and the Blackline specification darkens every piece of exterior brightwork. Alcantara and carbon fiber replace leather and wood inside.
The Bentayga Azure runs the opposite direction from the S. Bentley tunes it for comfort, with softer seat specification, front seat massage and ventilation as standard, quieter cabin detailing and an Azure badge on the flank. The 542 hp V8 and the air suspension carry over unchanged. It is the Bentayga for long distance calm rather than noise. We do not run it.
The Bentayga Speed sits at the top of the standard wheelbase range. Bentley raises the same 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 to 641 hp and 627 lb-ft, which takes it to 60 mph in about 3.4 seconds and on to 193 mph with the optional carbon ceramic brakes fitted. Wider rear tyres and a firmer rear differential tune come with it. We do not run the Speed.
The Bentayga Extended Wheelbase stretches the body by 180 millimetres, all of it behind the front seats, and is sold in Azure and Mulliner forms. Rear passengers get up to 100 millimetres more legroom, reclining airline style seats and an optional rear entertainment system. It is the Bentayga built to be sat in rather than driven. We do not run it.
