How It Drives
Nothing is building a naturally aspirated V10 again, and the R8 is one of the last cars that had one. Ten cylinders, 5.2 liters, no forced induction anywhere, and a note that climbs in intensity past 8,000 rpm rather than tailing off the way a turbocharged engine does. 540 horsepower, quattro all wheel drive, and sixty in 3.5 seconds with the traction to use all of it. On Ortega Highway the fixed suspension gives real composure over a rough surface most cars this quick would skate across. The coupe is stiffer than the Spyder and reacts a fraction quicker, the kind of difference you feel on the second lap of a familiar road rather than the first.
How It Photographs
Black inside and out gives the most serious looking R8 we run, and the shape needs directional light to show itself properly, the side blade, the low nose and the rear diffuser all disappearing in flat midday sun but reading clean under a lit forecourt or against a bright evening sky over Newport Harbor. Shoot it low from the rear three quarter to get the diffuser and the exhaust exits in frame. Against a dark background the car becomes pure outline, worth using rather than avoiding. The cabin is deliberately quiet in photographs and does not compete with the bodywork.
Why This One
This is one of two R8s we run and the closed one, stiffer than the Spyder and carrying a little more luggage behind the seats. Black inside and out makes it the more serious looking of the pair, the one to book when the car should read as a supercar rather than as a good day out. It costs a hundred dollars a day more than the white Spyder we also keep. If an open roof is what you actually want, take that one instead. If you want the V10 in its most composed, most photograph ready form, this is the R8 to book.
