The Ferrari F430 Spider puts a V8 that revs to 8,500 rpm right behind your shoulders, roof down.
The Ferrari F430 is a mid-engined V8 Ferrari with a flat-plane crank that revs to 8,500 rpm and no turbo anywhere, the car that first brought the manettino and the E-Diff to the road. Renters book it over a newer turbocharged Ferrari for the sound and the open roof, since a 488 is quicker but never shrieks like this one does.
The note climbs from a growl to a shriek instead of a shove, since the 4.3 liter V8 behind your head makes its 483 hp with revs, not boost, and the F1 paddles fire each shift with a real kick. Roof down it is the bucket-list drive, the one you book for yourself and not for a camera.
Ferrari sold the F430 in 4 forms, the coupe, the open Spider, the lighter 430 Scuderia and the Scuderia Spider 16M that paired the 2 ideas in a short run. We run the Spider.
The Ferrari F430 Spider is the convertible and the car we run, in red over tan leather with red piping. The 4.3 liter naturally aspirated V8 makes 483 hp and revs to 8,500 rpm, driving the rear wheels through the F1 paddle-shift gearbox with the E-Diff behind it. The fabric roof folds behind 2 roll hoops and the engine stays on show under glass.
The Ferrari F430 coupe is the fixed roof car, with the same 483 hp V8 and the same F1 gearbox or a 6-speed gated manual, about 70 kg lighter than the Spider and stiffer through a corner. The glass engine cover is the same and the roofline is the classic Berlinetta shape. We do not run the coupe.
The 430 Scuderia is the lightweight coupe, 503 hp from the same V8 with about 100 kg stripped out through bare carbon and no sound deadening, a faster F1 gearbox and a race mode on the manettino. It is the track car of the range and it rides like one. We do not run the Scuderia.
The Scuderia Spider 16M took the 503 hp Scuderia package and gave it the Spider's folding roof, with only 499 built to mark a Formula 1 constructors title. It is the rarest F430 and the loudest, since the open roof puts the stripped exhaust right behind you. We do not run the 16M.
