Audi built the R8 around a naturally aspirated V10, with an earlier V8 below it, and split the range by output, drivetrain and roof. We run the V10 coupe and the V10 Spyder.
R8 V10 Coupe
The Audi R8 V10 Coupe runs the 540 hp version of the 5.2 liter V10 through quattro all-wheel drive, and it is the fixed-roof car in our fleet. A renter gets full seat travel, a glass panel over the engine bay, and a shelf behind the seats for soft bags on top of the front trunk. The closed roof keeps wind and road noise down at freeway speed.
R8 V10 Spyder
The Audi R8 V10 Spyder shares the same 540 hp V10 and quattro drivetrain under a fabric roof, and we run it alongside the coupe. Seat travel is shorter because the roof mechanism sits behind the seats, so taller renters should confirm fit before booking. The roof folds in under 20 seconds and an independent rear window drops on its own to let the V10 in.
R8 V10 plus and V10 performance
The Audi R8 V10 plus and the R8 V10 performance are the high-output quattro grades, at 610 hp and 602 hp respectively, with carbon ceramic brakes, added carbon aero and a stiffer chassis tune. Both were offered as a coupe and as a Spyder. They are the fastest all-wheel-drive R8s Audi built, and we do not run either one.
R8 V10 RWD and V10 performance RWD
The Audi R8 V10 RWD grades drop the front driveshafts and send everything to the rear wheels, at 540 hp and later 562 hp. The car sheds about 143 pounds and the steering loses the slight numbness quattro adds on turn-in. It started as a limited run of 999 cars before Audi made it a regular grade. We do not run it.
R8 GT RWD
The Audi R8 GT RWD is the send-off, a rear-drive car making 602 hp with a 7-stage torque rear traction system and a run limited to 333 units worldwide. It is the most powerful rear-drive car Audi has built and the sharpest R8 to drive. We do not run it, and almost nobody rents one anywhere.
