The satin black BMW M4 Competition xDrive with the red interior is based in Los Angeles. It is the 2-door read, the car a stranger calls a sports car before they see the badge, and the matte finish makes it look custom rather than rented. Book it for the birthday, the photoshoot, the Saturday on the coast with one passenger who gets the good seat. It goes out to clients across Los Angeles, Orange County and the Inland Empire.
The carbon bucket seats are the first thing. Sit first, then swing your legs over the raised carbon section between your thighs. Once you are in they hold you low and tight. Push the button and the 3.0L twin-turbo straight-6 idles quiet. Pull away and the 8-speed automatic is smooth, the steering light in Comfort. Then the road clears. From about 2,500 rpm the engine pulls hard all the way to 7,200 rpm, 503 hp through all-wheel drive with no wheelspin, and the real engine note comes into the cabin amplified. The yellow calipers are BMW's mark for carbon ceramic brakes, and the pedal is firm and short. Run it along Pacific Coast Highway from Santa Monica to Malibu at a cruise, then take Latigo Canyon up through the hairpins at a sensible pace.
Satin black does not reflect, so the M4 photographs like a rendering. In direct sun the finish goes soft grey and every crease in the arches shows. In open shade it goes properly black and the yellow calipers inside the black wheels become the only colour on the car. After dark it absorbs the street light and the red interior through the glass is the frame. Take the rear three-quarter low to get the quad pipes and the diffuser. Shoot the red carbon bucket seat through the open door. These photos were taken in a lot beside a fence. In Los Angeles, shoot it at the Encinal Canyon summit overlook toward Point Dume, or on the Sunset Strip at night.
We run 7 M4s and this is the only one in a satin finish, and the only M4 Competition coupe based in Los Angeles. The others are grey, gloss black, blue and Miami Blue in Palm Springs, Orange County and San Diego at the same $495, the convertible is in San Diego at $595, and the CSL in Los Angeles is $595 with no back seat. If you want the matte look and the red carbon buckets without the CSL compromises, this is the car.
This is the M4 Competition with xDrive, 503 hp from the 3.0L twin-turbo inline-6, the 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. The paint is a satin black finish, which BMW calls frozen, over the carbon fibre roof and the quad tailpipes of the Competition. The wheels are gloss black with yellow brake calipers behind them. Inside it is red leather with the carbon fibre bucket seats, the Alcantara steering wheel with a red 12 o'clock marker, and the curved display across the dash. 2 doors, 4 seats, with a back seat for 2 adults on a short trip, and a 12 cubic foot trunk. Satin paint cannot go through an automatic car wash, so it is hand wash only.
