How It Drives
The standard wheelbase Escalade is about a foot shorter than the ESV body, and the difference shows up in a parking garage near South Coast Plaza rather than on the open road. It rides on coil springs rather than the Magnetic Ride fitted to our Sport trucks, so it is the softest of our Escalades over a sharp dip, though still composed at a cruise. The 6.2 liter V8 makes 420 horsepower and reaches sixty in 6.0 seconds. On the approach to John Wayne Airport and onto the 405, it settles into a quiet, comfortable cruise, and the easier turning circle pays off the moment you leave the freeway for city streets.
How It Photographs
Black on black in the shorter, chrome grille body gives you the most traditional Escalade look and the one most people picture when they hear the name. The proportions read as more balanced than the longer ESV trucks, which can look stretched from some angles, so this one photographs best from a front three quarter angle outside a hotel entrance near Fashion Island. Like any black vehicle it needs evening light or a lit forecourt, since it disappears in flat midday sun on a street like Newport Coast Drive. The chrome trim, not blacked out, is what separates it visually from the rest of our fleet.

This is the shortest Escalade we run and the one that carries the lowest per mile overage rate in the group. It is about a foot shorter than either ESV body, which you feel in a parking structure near South Coast Plaza and nowhere else, and it keeps the chrome grille rather than the blacked out Sport face, reading as traditional rather than discreet. Book it when the group is travelling light, the day involves city parking in Irvine or Costa Mesa, and a longer trip is on the table.
