How It Drives
The first thing you notice is how fast the nose moves. The 812 Superfast runs electric steering with rear-wheel steering behind it, and the rack is quick, so the first corner off Sunset arrives before you are ready for it. Give it 10 minutes and that becomes the point. The 6.5L V12 sits behind the front axle, naturally aspirated, 789 hp at the top of an 8,900 rpm range, and it pulls cleanly from idle. The 7-speed dual-clutch is geared short, so 70 mph on the 405 is a busy 2,500 rpm and the engine never goes quiet. This one runs the raw exhaust with no particulate filter, so what you hear is the engine. Take it over Mulholland Drive early on a weekday, at a scenic pace, and let it climb through third between the turns.
How It Photographs
Satin black with a light blue stripe does the opposite of a gloss car. In direct sun the paint swallows the light and the stripe is the only thing that reflects, so shoot at midday if you want the stripe to carry the frame. In open shade the body turns soft grey and the long hood reads clearly. After dark the car disappears and only the blue stripe and blue calipers are left. Take the head-on low shot with the stripe running from the lens over the hood to the roof. Shoot close on the blue caliper behind the black wheel. These photos were taken in an office park lot, so take it to the Encinal Canyon overlook at sunset.
