THE DRIVE

How It Drives

The engine is in the front, behind the front axle, and you feel it before you leave the driveway. You sit behind a long hood with a normal view out, and the ride in Comfort is softer than a mid-engine Ferrari. The 3.9 liter twin-turbo V8 makes 553 hp and barks when you move the manettino to Sport. The 7-speed dual-clutch is smooth in automatic and quick on the paddles. In the low gears Ferrari holds the torque back until you reach for the redline, and in the high gears it all arrives, so it cruises at 2,000 rpm and still reaches 196 mph on paper. Drive it down Highway 101 through Encinitas and Carlsbad with the roof down, then cross the Coronado Bridge at the end of the day with the bay on both sides of you.

THE LOOK

How It Photographs

Red over tan is the classic Ferrari convertible pairing, with the shields on the fenders. In direct sun the red goes flat and bright, so shoot it roof down from the side, where the star wheels and red calipers break the colour up. In open shade the paint deepens and the tan leather glows out of the open cabin. After dark, roof up, it reads as a dark coupe, which is the other frame to take. Shoot the nose badge close and the 2 round taillights from behind. These photos were taken on a parking garage roof. Shoot it on the bay side of Coronado with the skyline behind, or under the tree canopy in Rancho Santa Fe.

THE PICK

Why This One

Red over tan cuoio with the shields on the fenders is the classic Ferrari convertible pairing. This is the California T, the turbo version with 553 hp and a metal roof that folds in 14 seconds. The engine sits in the front and there are 2 small seats in the back, so it is the Ferrari for the badge without the drama. It is based in San Diego at $795 a day and delivers to Orange County and the Inland Empire. Book it for the wedding exit.

THE BUILD

What's On This One

This is the California T, the turbo version of the California with the folding metal hardtop. Standard on it is the 3.9 liter twin-turbo V8 with 553 hp, the 7-speed dual-clutch, carbon ceramic brakes, magnetic dampers with a bumpy road setting, a 3-position manettino, and a metal roof that folds in 14 seconds while the car is stopped. On this car the paint is red, the wheels are silver 5-spoke star wheels, the calipers are red, and the Scuderia shields are on both front fenders. Inside it is tan cuoio leather with the prancing horse stitched into the headrests and the yellow shield on the wheel. 4 seats, 2 doors, rear-wheel drive.
