THE DRIVE

How It Drives

There is no turbo on this car. The 4.3 liter V8 sits behind you under a glass cover, makes 483 hp, and revs to 8,500 rpm with a flat-plane crank, so the note climbs from a growl to a shriek instead of a shove. You feel it build. The F1 gearbox is a single-clutch automated manual, so the paddles fire a real shift with a real kick, and in automatic it pauses at parking speed by design. The manettino on the wheel started the idea, and the E-Diff tightens the rear on the way out of a corner. Roof down, the exhaust is at your shoulder. Take it over the Coronado Bridge at dusk, then along the bay past the Hotel Del. The bridge curves, the water opens up, and the V8 in 3rd at 5,000 rpm is the soundtrack.

THE LOOK

How It Photographs

Red over tan with the shields on the fenders is the F430 the posters were made of. In direct sun the red is bright and flat and the star wheels throw light, so take the low front three-quarter, roof down, tan headrests above the doors. In open shade the red goes deeper and the red piping on the tan leather is the detail to shoot close. After dark the 4 round taillights and the glass over the engine are the frame. Roof down, the 2 roll hoops are the line that says Spider, so shoot it from behind. These photos were taken on the Harbor Island lot with the downtown skyline and sailboats behind, still the place to shoot it.

THE PICK

Why This One

Red over tan with the shields on the fenders is the F430 the posters were made of. This is the Spider, the open version, and what it brings is the sound. The 4.3 liter V8 is naturally aspirated, revs to 8,500 rpm, and with the soft top folded behind the 2 roll hoops the exhaust is at your shoulder. It is based in San Diego at $695 a day and delivers to Orange County and the Inland Empire. Book it for the bucket-list drive or the proposal on the bayfront.

THE BUILD

What's On This One

This is the F430 Spider, the open version of the F430. Standard on it is the 4.3 liter naturally aspirated V8 with 483 hp and an 8,500 rpm redline, the F1 paddle-shift gearbox, the E-Diff electronic differential, the manettino on the wheel, the glass engine cover and a fabric top that folds behind the roll hoops. On this car the paint is red, the wheels are silver 5-spoke star wheels, the brake calipers are yellow, and the Scuderia shields are on both front fenders. Inside it is tan leather with red piping on the seats, the prancing horse stitched into the headrests, tan door panels and the yellow shield on the wheel. 2 seats, 2 doors, rear-wheel drive.
