How It Drives
The Portofino is the Ferrari built for distance rather than lap times, and it is the easiest car with this badge to spend a full day in. 591 horsepower from a twin turbo V8 mounted in front of you rather than behind, rear wheel drive, sixty in 3.4 seconds. The front engine layout gives it a longer, calmer feel through a corner than our mid engined Ferraris, and the ride stays noticeably more forgiving over the rougher patches of Pacific Coast Highway. The folding hardtop drops in about fourteen seconds and can operate on the move. It has four seats, which none of our other Ferraris can claim, and steering light enough that a nervous passenger relaxes fast.
How It Photographs
Burgundy over tan is the most traditional combination in our Ferrari fleet, and it photographs as old money rather than new. The deep red shifts almost to brown in shade and warms up considerably in late light along the Newport Coast, and the tan leather against it is the classic grand touring palette. Shoot it roof down with the cabin visible, ideally at golden hour on Newport Coast Drive or the climb up to Pelican Hill, when both colours are at their best. The long bonnet is the defining line of the shape, and against a coast road or a hotel forecourt in Laguna it looks entirely at home.
Why This One
This is the only Ferrari we own with usable rear seats and the only one with the engine ahead of the driver rather than behind. That makes it the one you can spend a full day in, and the one to book when two people are not the whole party or a bag needs somewhere to go. It is also the lowest day rate on our Ferrari row. If somebody is joining you, or the plan is a long coast run through Laguna and Dana Point rather than a canyon hour, nothing else we keep does this particular job.
