This black Land Rover Defender X, black interior, is based in Orange County, the only Defender in our fleet and the top specification short of the V8. Black reads considered rather than costume, working outside a trailhead on Ortega Highway as easily as outside a hotel in Laguna Beach. It seats five, takes a wetsuit or a dog, and is built to be used.
How It Drives
The Defender is the only vehicle in our fleet designed around capability first and refinement second, and X is the top specification of it. 395 horsepower from a mild hybrid turbocharged straight six, all wheel drive and sixty in 5.8 seconds, which is startling for something shaped like a shipping crate. Take it up Santiago Canyon Road and the seating position, upright and high with excellent visibility over the flat bonnet, makes the road easier to read than it looks from lower cars. Air suspension raises and lowers the body by drive mode. It rides more softly than you would guess and feels far less agricultural, while still looking like it belongs somewhere with no pavement.
How It Photographs
Black on a Defender X reads as tactical rather than luxurious, and it is the most utilitarian looking vehicle we rent in Orange County. The shape is squared off with exposed fixings, a visible spare wheel on the rear door and an alpine window line above the rear glass, and all of those read well in silhouette. Shoot it against the hills along Santiago Canyon Road rather than a hotel entrance, because it looks wrong outside a resort and right against rock and chaparral. Dark bodywork wants evening light. The rear three quarter view, with the spare wheel in frame, is the strongest angle.

We run one Defender, and this is it. Black on black is the considered specification rather than the safari read a lighter colour would give the same truck, and the X trim adds the gloss black roof, orange calipers and the fuller interior on top of the shared straight six engine.
