The black Maserati Ghibli with the black leather interior is based in San Diego. It is the Italian sedan for the night that needs 4 doors, the Gaslamp dinner with 3 friends, the client pickup at the airport, the arrival where a coupe would leave someone on the curb. The trident on the grille does the talking at the valet. It goes out to clients across San Diego, Orange County and the Inland Empire.
The start button sits low to the left of the wheel, and the 3.0 liter twin-turbo V6 wakes with a short growl before it settles. Press the Sport button and the exhaust valves open, so the same engine goes from quiet to a hard rasp past 3,000 rpm. That is the whole trick of this car. 345 hp through an 8-speed automatic to the rear wheels, long metal paddles fixed to the column, and a nose that turns in quicker than a sedan this size should. In Normal it is soft enough for the 5 freeway at rush hour. Take it over the Coronado Bridge in Sport with the windows down, the bay below and the Hotel del Coronado ahead. The sound comes back off the bridge rail. That is where it earns the badge.
Black over black on a sedan means the shape does the work, not the colour. In direct sun the paint goes to a mirror and the silver multi-spoke wheels are the brightest point. In open shade the body turns to a soft charcoal and the chrome grille reads. After dark it is all headlights and red tail lamps, so shoot it under the skyline lights. The frame to take is the low front three-quarter with the grille filling the corner. Shoot the quad tailpipes close and the Maserati script on the door sill. These photos were taken in a downtown San Diego lot by the Harbor Drive pedestrian bridge with the skyline behind, and that is still the spot.
This is the only Ghibli we run. The other Maserati based in San Diego is the white GranTurismo Sport Convertible at $595 a day, a 2-door with 4 seats and no roof over your head. This one is $395 a day, has 4 doors and a trunk, and seats 5. If the weekend involves other people, luggage or an airport, this is the Maserati that makes sense. If it is a sunset drive for 2, book the convertible.
This is the Ghibli, the rear-wheel-drive sedan with the 3.0 liter twin-turbo V6, 345 hp, an 8-speed automatic and column-mounted paddles. 4 doors and 5 seats. Standard on it, the trident grille, frameless door glass, the 8.4 inch touchscreen, the start button left of the wheel and the Sport mode exhaust valves. This car is black over a black leather cabin with black leather across the dash and door tops, and it rides on silver multi-spoke wheels. Quad exhaust tips at the back, Maserati script on the aluminum door sills and the trident on the grille. Nothing on the outside shouts, which is the point of a black Ghibli.
