How It Drives
The roof is the mechanism. Hold the switch and the 2-piece hardtop folds under the deck in about 30 seconds at low speed, so it goes down leaving the hotel driveway. With it open the 3.8 liter twin-turbo V8 is right behind your head and what you hear is the turbo whoosh on every lift. 562 hp through a 7-speed dual-clutch to the rear wheels, with a beat of lag below 3,500 rpm and then a hard run to 8,000. The steering is hydraulic and heavy. The brake pedal feels wooden until you commit. There is no Park, just Neutral and the brake lever at your left knee. Take it down Pacific Coast Highway from Corona del Mar through Crystal Cove to Laguna, roof down, Sport mode, with the rear window up so you can still talk.
How It Photographs
Mantis Green is the colour that makes a McLaren read as loud. In direct sun it goes acid bright and the black wheels, the black roof deck and the black intakes become the outline. In open shade it deepens toward a leaf green. After dark it goes near black under streetlight, so shoot it in daylight. The frame to take is the front three-quarter with both doors up and the roof down, so the green doors stand against the sky. Shoot the black buttresses behind the seats close. These photos were taken in a studio on a turntable. Put it on the bluff at Crystal Cove at sunrise or outside the galleries on Laguna Canyon Road.
Why This One
This is the only 570S Spider we base in Orange County, and the only green 570S we run. The other Spiders are Vega Blue in Los Angeles at $995 a day and satin dark grey in San Diego at $1,195. This car is $895 a day with a $1,500 refundable deposit, $1,000 less to hold than the blue 570S coupe parked beside it at the same rate.
