The Volcano Red McLaren 650S Spider with the black leather and red stitching interior is based in Orange County. It is the McLaren at $695 a day, the folding hardtop and the dihedral doors without the bill of the newer cars, so it is the car for the first McLaren weekend, the roof-down run to Laguna, the birthday that needed the doors to go up. You can have it brought to you in Orange County, Los Angeles, San Diego, Palm Springs and the Inland Empire.
The engine is the mechanism. A 3.8 liter twin-turbo V8 behind your head, 641 hp, and with the roof folded you hear the turbos spool and sigh on every lift. It breathes in below 3,000 rpm, then runs hard, 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds. The gearbox is a 7-speed dual-clutch that creeps like an automatic. The steering is hydraulic, heavy at a standstill and talkative at speed. The carbon ceramic brakes feel dead until you press hard. The dampers are linked corner to corner by hydraulics, so the ride is softer than the shape suggests, and brake hard and the airbrake stands up behind you. There is no Park, just Neutral and the lever at your left knee. Take it down Pacific Coast Highway through Crystal Cove with the roof folded and the rear window up.
Volcano Red is a deep metallic red with a lot of orange in it. In direct sun it flares to a candy red across the hood and the carbon front splitter goes black. In open shade it settles to a dark cherry and the red calipers inside the black wheels match the paint. After dark it goes near black, so shoot it in daylight. The frame to take is the rear three-quarter, doors up, roof down, the carbon sill plate in the corner. Shoot the red stitching across the black seats close. These photos were taken at an industrial roll-up door. Put it against the white walls at the Montage in Laguna Beach or on the bluff above Crystal Cove.
This is the only 650S we run, and it fills the gap under our 570S and 720S cars in Orange County. It is $695 a day with a $1,000 refundable deposit, $200 a day less than the 570S Spider and $600 less than the 720S Spider based here, and it holds the lowest deposit of those 4. It is also the one with the interlinked suspension and the airbrake at under a 570S price. For a first McLaren with the roof off, this is where the math lands.
This is the 650S Spider, the open 650S with a retractable hardtop that folds under the deck in about 17 seconds at low speed. 3.8 liter twin-turbo V8, 641 hp, a 7-speed dual-clutch, rear-wheel drive, a carbon fiber tub, carbon ceramic brakes, the hydraulic interlinked suspension, the airbrake and dihedral doors are all standard. This car is Volcano Red over a black leather cabin with red stitching across the seats, the dash and the door panels. Carbon fiber trims the center console and the door switch panels, a carbon sill plate carries the 650S badge, and it rides on black multi-spoke wheels with red brake calipers. 2 seats and a frunk under the nose.
