This McLaren 720S Spider in white over a black and red cabin is based in Orange County, the only open 720S in our fleet. White shows the bodywork properly with the roof up or down, and the lowest per mile rate in our McLaren row makes it the pick for a long coast day rather than a photo stop.
There are no conventional anti roll bars anywhere on this car. Instead the dampers are hydraulically connected across each axle and read the road hundreds of times a second, which is how a 720S Spider manages to ride better than most sports sedans while still cornering flat. 710 horsepower and 568 lb-ft get you to sixty in 2.8 seconds. Run the coast road through Newport Beach with the roof down and the rear glass lowered and the twin turbo V8 becomes considerably more present in the cabin than it is with the roof up, which is the whole argument for taking this car over the coupe.
White with a black and red interior is the clearest way to show 720S bodywork, which is built from compound curves and hidden ducts rather than wings and splitters, and a light colour is what lets those surfaces actually read in a photograph. Along the Newport harbour and out toward the Lido peninsula the white body sits against the water the same way a boat does, which is not an accident of this colour choice. Roof down, the black and red cabin becomes the strongest colour in the frame. Direct sun works fine here, unusual for a McLaren, which makes this the easiest car in our fleet to shoot on short notice.
This is the only open 720S we keep, and it carries the lowest per mile overage rate in our McLaren row, at $3 a mile past the included distance. That combination makes it the car to take for a long coast day along Newport Beach rather than a short photo stop. White is also the colour that shows the 720S bodywork properly, since the aerodynamics are routed underneath the surfaces instead of bolted on top of them. Our turquoise 720S is the coupe and the statement car in the fleet. This is the one built for actually using the day.
This is a 720S Spider, finished in white over a black and red cabin. It carries 710 horsepower and 568 lb-ft from a 4.0 liter twin turbo V8, rear wheel drive only, for sixty in 2.8 seconds. The chassis uses a hydraulically interlinked suspension with no conventional anti roll bars, and the full width rear wing deploys automatically under hard braking. The single piece carbon roof folds in eleven seconds at up to 31 mph, and the rear window drops on its own switch. This car does not have CarPlay, it runs McLaren's IRIS system from this era instead.
