The satin black McLaren 720S Spider with the bright blue MSO alcantara interior is based in Orange County. It is the McLaren people ask for by name, and this one opens its roof, so the blue cabin is what the Fashion Island valet line sees first. Book it for the Pacific Coast Highway run, the birthday that has been on the wallpaper for years, or the shoot nobody can copy. It serves Orange County, Los Angeles, San Diego, Palm Springs and the Inland Empire.
The suspension is the mechanism. The 720S has hydraulic dampers linked corner to corner with no anti-roll bars, so the first 10 minutes feel wrong in a good way. The car rides like a sedan over broken pavement and then turns in like nothing this wide should. The 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 sits behind your head, 710 hp with a beat of lag before the shove, and with the roof folded you hear the turbos breathe on every lift. The steering is hydraulic and heavy. The brakes feel dead until you commit, so press harder. There is no Park, just Neutral and the brake lever at your left knee. Leave it in Comfort. Take Newport Coast Drive past Pelican Hill with the roof down and let the airbrake stand up in the mirror above Crystal Cove.
Satin black takes no reflections, so the teardrop canopy and the hollow door blades read as clean edges, not glare. In direct sun the paint goes to a soft charcoal and the blue calipers inside the black wheels are the only colour outside. In open shade the blue cabin does all the work. After dark the eye-socket headlamps and the blue seats carry the frame. The shot to take is the front three-quarter, doors up, roof down, so the blue seats show through the open sides. Shoot the MSO stitching on a headrest close. These photos were taken on a palm-lined rooftop deck. Put it on the bluff at Crystal Cove at sunrise.
This is the only 720S we base in Orange County, and the only satin one. Our 720S Spiders in Los Angeles are yellow with black MSO stripes and dark grey, both at $1,295 a day, the same rate as this car, so the choice is the finish and the cabin. Nothing else we run pairs satin black with a blue MSO interior. If you want the 720S in Newport or Laguna without a drive up the 405 first, and you want the cabin people photograph, this is the car.
This is the 720S Spider, the open 720S with a 1-piece carbon roof that folds in 11 seconds at up to 31 mph. 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8, 710 hp, a 7-speed dual-clutch, rear-wheel drive, the carbon MonoCage II tub, carbon ceramic brakes, the hydraulic interlinked suspension, the airbrake, the folding driver display and dihedral doors are all standard. This car is satin black over a bright blue alcantara cabin by McLaren Special Operations, with MSO stitched into the seats, blue alcantara across the dash, the doors and the steering wheel rim, and blue brake calipers behind black multi-spoke wheels. The rear window drops on its own, so roof up or down you can let the engine in.
