The black metallic McLaren GT with the black and red-stitched interior is based in Los Angeles. This is the McLaren for the pickup at LAX with real luggage, the 2-day run up the coast, and the renter who wants the McLaren doors without the car shouting about it. You can have it brought to you in Los Angeles, Orange County and the Inland Empire.
Start with where you sit. The GT puts you lower than a sedan but higher than a 720S, with a lower sill to step over and 110 mm of ground clearance before you touch the nose lift. Softer springs and a longer tail mean it settles on the road instead of fidgeting. Then the engine, the 4.0L twin-turbo V8 with smaller turbos tuned to pull from low revs, 612 hp without the lag beat of the bigger cars. Part throttle it sounds raw. Full throttle toward the redline it sounds angry. The steering is hydraulic and tells you what the tarmac is doing. Take Ocean Avenue along Palisades Park at a cruise, then PCH past Santa Monica with a bag in the back. One honest note, there is a drone at 60 in seventh. Pick a lower gear.
Black metallic over black multi-spoke wheels with red calipers photographs on light alone. In direct sun the flake comes up and the long tail reads silver along the top surfaces. In open shade it becomes a mirror and you have to watch what it reflects. After dark the glass tailgate takes every light in the lot and the red calipers hold. Take the rear three-quarter with the tailgate up and the bay open, the frame no other McLaren can give you. Shoot the red caliper through the black spokes close. These were taken on a rooftop deck with towers behind. In Los Angeles, shoot it on Admiralty Way in Marina del Rey with the masts behind it.
We run 3 McLaren GTs and this is the only one based in Los Angeles. The blue GT is in Orange County at $895 a day and the yellow one is in San Diego at $1,095. This is the black one with the red-stitched cabin, the quietest spec of the 3 and the one you can collect at LAX. It is $1,295 a day, the highest rate of our 3 GTs, with a $5,000 refundable deposit. If the trip starts with luggage, it fills a slot no 720S can.
This is the McLaren GT, the touring one. The carbon tub is taller at the back to carry a 420 litre bay under a glass tailgate, on top of the 150 litre frunk, so it takes a weekend's bags or a set of clubs where the others take a backpack. 612 hp 4.0L twin-turbo V8, 7-speed dual-clutch, rear-wheel drive, adaptive dampers with softer front springs, nose lift on a stalk, the dihedral doors. On this car the paint is black metallic over black multi-spoke wheels with red brake calipers. Inside it is black leather with red contrast stitching on the seats, doors, dash and steering wheel, with the portrait IRIS screen on the console. 2 seats.
