THE DRIVE

How It Drives

The engine is a 2.0 liter turbo 4-cylinder with a 48-volt mild hybrid behind it, 416 hp, and it is the quiet way into an AMG GT. The electric assist fills in before the turbo wakes, so the car leaves the line without the pause and gets to 60 in 4.6 seconds. The 9-speed shifts fast in Sport+ and sits in a high gear in Comfort. You sit low and far back behind a long hood, in the AMG seat with the badge on the headrest, with the portrait screen rising out of the console beside you. Rear-wheel drive, and the chassis is calm enough on the 5 that you forget the length. Take it down Highway 101 from Carlsbad through Encinitas to Del Mar. It is the car for that road at 45 mph.

THE LOOK

How It Photographs

Hightech Silver on the long AMG GT body lives on reflections. In direct sun it goes to chrome along the fender tops and the Panamericana grille blends into the same tone, so shoot it slightly off the sun. In open shade it turns to a cool grey and the black wheels, black grille slats and dark glass become the outline. After dark it picks up every streetlight along the flank. The frame to take is the front three-quarter, low, grille slats filling the corner, coast behind. Shoot the AMG badge stamped into the headrest close. These photos were taken on a coastal overlook above the Pacific. Shoot it at the Mount Soledad overlook, with the whole coast behind the car.

THE PICK

Why This One

We run 7 other AMG cars, 2 GT Rs, 2 GT 63s, a GT 53, an SL 63 and the GT C Roadster, and this is the only GT 43 among them. In San Diego it is also the only AMG GT with 4 seats and a fixed roof. The satin silver GT C Roadster here is $895 a day, the older 2-seat V8 with the red top. This one is $995 a day with back seats. Pick it for the client day. Pick the roadster for the noise.

THE BUILD

What's On This One

This is the AMG GT 43, the 2+2 coupe in the current AMG GT range with the 2.0 liter turbo 4-cylinder and the 48-volt mild hybrid, 416 hp through a 9-speed automatic to the rear wheels. Standard on it, the Panamericana grille with the vertical slats, the AMG steering wheel with the round drive-mode controllers, the portrait MBUX touchscreen on the console, the digital cluster and AMG sport seats. This car is Hightech Silver over a black cabin with black leather seats, the AMG badge stamped into the front headrests, black door panels, a black flat-bottomed wheel and aluminum pedals. It rides on gloss black multi-spoke wheels. 2 doors, 4 seats, with the rear pair sized for kids or bags.
