The satin grey Mercedes-AMG GT 63 four-door with the red and black interior is based in Los Angeles. THE DRIVE

How It Drives

Start with the way it pulls away. The GT 63 uses a wet-clutch 9-speed instead of a torque converter, so the first metres feel mechanical, a clutch taking up rather than a slur, and all-wheel drive puts 577 hp down without wheelspin. Then the V8, the 4.0L twin-turbo with the turbos inside the V, which is why the throttle answers fast and the sound stays close, a deep boom at start-up that the long body muffles once you are rolling. Rear-axle steering tightens the car at low speed, so a 4-door this long turns into a hotel driveway without a shuffle. Comfort rides like a sedan on the air springs. Sport+ firms it and opens the exhaust. Take Sunset Boulevard from the Strip west through Beverly Hills at cruising pace, windows down, and let the overrun talk at each light.

THE LOOK

How It Photographs

Satin grey does not reflect, which changes every frame. In direct sun the paint stays flat and the car reads like a block of stone, the black wheels and the chrome grille bars the only shine. In open shade it seems to absorb the light. After dark the body goes to nothing and the red cabin glows through the glass, so shoot the interior at night, doors open. Take the front three-quarter, the grille and the long hood are the strong end of this shape. Shoot the red headrest with the AMG emblem close. These were taken on a lot, not on location. Put it at the curb on Rodeo Drive or in a Sunset Strip valet line at night.

THE PICK

Why This One

We run 7 AMG GT variants and this is the only GT 63 based in Los Angeles. It is also the only satin-finish AMG four-door we have. The black GT 63 in Orange County is $395 a day with the same V8, and the LA GT 53 at $395 has the red cabin but an inline-6 under the hood. This one is $595 a day, and the $200 buys the satin grey paint, the LA pickup and the V8 together. The deposit is $1,000, refundable.

THE BUILD

What's On This One

This is the AMG GT 63 four-door, the V8 one. 4.0L twin-turbo V8, 577 hp, AMG 4Matic+ all-wheel drive, the wet-clutch 9-speed, multi-chamber air suspension and rear-axle steering, with a hatch at the back. On this car the paint is a satin grey designo finish over gloss black multi-spoke wheels. Inside it is red and black leather, AMG performance seats with the AMG emblem embossed in the red headrests, a flat-bottom AMG steering wheel with the drive-mode dials on the rim, the twin-screen dash and the AMG console with the row of switches. Between the back seats there is a rear console with its own touchscreen and vents. 4 seats, 4 doors.
