How It Drives
The GT R is the hardest edged car in our Mercedes-Benz fleet. A 4.0 liter twin turbo V8 mounted behind the front axle sends 577 horsepower to the rear wheels only, with a nine stage traction control dial on the console that lets you choose how much the electronics step in. Sixty comes up in 3.5 seconds. Rear wheel steering sharpens the nose at low speed and steadies it at high speed, which matters on the tighter turns of Ortega Highway where the long bonnet needs to be placed carefully. It is loud, it is stiff, and it asks more of the driver than anything else we run under this badge.
How It Photographs
Blue on a GT R reads as a motorsport colour rather than a luxury one, and in gloss it throws reflections that a matte car cannot, which gives a photographer more to work with under the wide sky along Ortega Highway. The long bonnet is the defining shape and it photographs best from a low front three quarter angle where the length reads clearly. The fixed rear wing and the centre exit exhaust are the second strongest angle. Black interior keeps the cabin serious rather than distracting from the exterior. This is the easier of our two GT R to keep looking clean between bookings.
Why This One
We run two AMG GT R at the same rate, and this is the gloss one. Blue paint reads as a motorsport colour without the matte finish drawing constant questions, and gloss is easier to keep clean across a multi day booking than the matte finish on our other GT R, which needs specific care and cannot be run through a normal wash. If the goal is the car itself, the traction dial, the noise and the chassis, rather than a conversation about the paint every time you stop, this is the one to book. Our other GT R wears a factory matte green that draws more attention and asks for more care.
