The two-tone silver over black Mercedes-Benz Metris with the white diamond-quilted interior, a Maybach-style conversion, is based in Los Angeles. This is the car for 6 people who want to arrive together and sit in a lounge on the way, the airport run for a family, a bachelorette night where the party starts at the curb. It goes out to clients across Los Angeles, Orange County and the Inland Empire.
Start with the back, because that is where this one is really driven from. Slide the door and the cabin is white quilted leather, a ceiling of lit panels, 2 captain chairs facing a rear bench, a wood console with a screen. Up front it is a Metris, a 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder with 208 hp, rear-wheel drive, an automatic, and a high seat with a view straight down over the chrome grille. It is not quick and it does not pretend to be. It is easy. The steering is light and the van tracks straight on the 405. Take Century Boulevard out of LAX, onto the 405 north, then Sunset through the Beverly Hills flats to a hotel driveway, where the door slides open and 6 people step out of what the valet reads as a Maybach.
Silver over black splits the van at the beltline, which lowers it in every frame. In direct sun the silver top takes the sky and the black lower half disappears into its own shadow, so the shape reads lean. In open shade both tones show and the chrome carries the shine. After dark the photo is inside, the lit ceiling and the white quilting glow and the body goes black. Take the rear cabin looking forward from the back bench, ceiling lit, the frame this van exists for. Shoot the quilted seat with the control pad close. These were taken on a rooftop deck in Los Angeles, and a top deck at dusk, doors open, ceiling on, is the shot.
This is the only Metris we run, and it is based in Los Angeles. The point of it is the back. 2 captain chairs, a bench, a ceiling of lights and a screen, and a door that slides open at the curb. At $995 a day with a $1,000 refundable deposit it costs $100 more than the G63 in LA and seats 2 more people in a cabin they will photograph. The grille is the conversion's, not a factory Maybach, and the rate is for the cabin.
