The white Porsche 911 Carrera 4S with the black interior is based in San Diego. It is the 911 with the hard roof and the driven front axle, so it is the car for the drive that leaves the coast, the morning up Sunrise Highway, the client dinner where you want to be read as someone who chose this on purpose. It delivers across San Diego, Orange County and the Inland Empire.
The front axle is the difference. Put your foot down out of a wet corner and the 4S hooks up and goes where a rear-drive 911 asks you to wait. The all-wheel drive engages without you feeling it, so the steering stays as clean as the 2-wheel-drive car. Behind you the 3.0 liter twin-turbo flat-six makes 443 hp and pulls from under 2,000 rpm in one long shove, through an 8-speed PDK that creeps cleanly in traffic and snaps when you ask. The ride is on adaptive dampers, so the 5 freeway is calm. The brakes are steel with a firm, short pedal. Take it up Highway 78 to Palomar Mountain, 20 hairpins in 7 miles, and that front axle is what lets you lean on it out of every one of them.
White over black on a 911 coupe is the clean spec. In direct sun the white goes flat and bright and the shape does the work, the wide hips, the full-width light bar and the red calipers reading as the outline. In open shade the paint picks up blue from the sky and the black cabin shows through the glass as a block. After dark it is the one 911 colour that still reads under streetlight outside the Gaslamp. The frame to take is the rear three-quarter, low, with the light bar across the frame. Shoot the 4S script on the tail close. Put it on Torrey Pines Road above the Gliderport with the cliffs behind.
Of the 911s we base in San Diego, this is the only Carrera coupe and the only white one. The 3 cabriolets here are the chalk grey Carrera at $595 a day, the black GTS at $895 and the black Turbo S at $995. This one is $695 a day with a $2,500 refundable deposit, and it is the only all-wheel-drive Carrera we have in San Diego. If the plan involves the mountains, a grey morning or 4 people and luggage, this is the one.
This is the Carrera 4S, the all-wheel-drive S coupe. The S engine brings 443 hp and 390 lb-ft from the 3.0 liter twin-turbo flat-six, with the bigger S brakes and red calipers, an 8-speed PDK, adaptive dampers, Wet Mode and 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels as standard. The 4 adds the driven front axle. This car is white over a black cabin. It is a coupe with a fixed roof, 2 doors and 4 seats, the rear pair for bags or small kids, plus the frunk under the hood for 2 soft bags. The twist switch sits to the left of the wheel and the tach sits dead centre.
