This red Porsche 911 Carrera with a black interior is based in Orange County, the newer, wider bodied version of our entry level 911. Guards style red is what most people picture when they picture a 911, moving this car from understated to classic without tipping into spectacle. Book it for the current generation and the colour, not extra speed.
A Carrera is still a 911, which means the seating position, the steering and the way the chassis moves are the things people spend far more money chasing elsewhere on our row. 379 horsepower from a 3.0 litre twin-turbo flat six, rear-wheel drive, and sixty in 4.0 seconds, enough on any road that has corners. What this car gives you that a faster one cannot is clarity. Less power means you use more of it, more often, and on Santiago Canyon Road the chassis is so far ahead of the engine that the car never feels close to its limit. It is the thinking driver's supercar day, not the fastest one on our row.
Red is the colour people picture when they picture a 911, and on the current wide-body car it reads as classic rather than loud. It photographs hot in direct sun and holds its saturation at golden hour better than most bright colours, which gives a wide shooting window along Pacific Coast Highway through Dana Point. The full-width light bar and the wider hips of this generation are the details that separate it from the narrower blue Carrera we also keep. Frame the rear three-quarter to get the taillight and the haunches in one shot.
Of our two base 911 Carreras this is the newer, wider-bodied car and the only red one. Red is the colour people picture when they picture a 911, and it holds saturation through golden hour better than the blue car does, which widens the shooting window at Dana Point or along the coast. It is four seconds to sixty against 4.4 for the blue car, a difference you will see on paper more than feel on the road. You are paying for the newer generation and the colour here, not for a different driving experience.
This is the 911 Carrera, red over black, the current wide-body generation in our fleet. A 3.0 litre twin-turbo flat six makes 379 horsepower and 331 lb-ft, sent to the rear wheels through an 8-speed PDK with a toggle shifter. Standard on this trim: adaptive dampers, a full-width LED tail light bar, a 10.9-inch touchscreen, and a twist-switch start on the left in place of the physical key on the older Carrera we keep. Four seats, two doors, and staggered wheels front to rear. It is the newer, wider of the two base Carreras on our row.
