The agate grey Porsche Boxster S with the black alcantara interior is based in San Diego. It is a 2-seat mid-engined roadster built up as a custom RS-style car, so it is the one for the coast road with the top down, the proposal at the Cove, the birthday where you want sun, wind and a flat-six behind your shoulders rather than a crowd. Book it for delivery in San Diego, Orange County and the Inland Empire.
The engine sits behind your shoulders, not behind the rear axle, and that is the whole feeling. The 3.4 liter flat-six is naturally aspirated, 315 hp, and it does nothing until you ask, then climbs with the note getting harder the whole way up, no turbo, no lag. The weight is between the axles, so the nose goes where you point it and the tail follows without the 911's mass behind you. It is entertaining at 45 mph, which matters on a coast road. The PDK shifts with the paddles or on its own. The steering is heavy at parking speed and precise after. The fabric roof folds in about 9 seconds on the move. Take it down Torrey Pines Road past the Gliderport to La Jolla Cove, top down. That is where these photos were shot.
Agate grey reads almost black in shade and silver-grey in full sun, and the custom bodywork is the story. In direct sun the big front intakes, the hood vent and the carbon ducktail wing show as shadow lines and the grey wheels go bright. In open shade the car turns to one dark shape and the yellow marker on the wheel is the only colour. After dark it disappears, so shoot it in daylight. The frame to take is the low front three-quarter on a bend with the ocean behind, roof down. Shoot the carbon ducktail close, and the yellow marker on the wheel. These photos were taken on the La Jolla coast road, and that is the spot.
This is the only Boxster we run, and the only mid-engined Porsche we base in San Diego. It is $395 a day with a $2,500 refundable deposit, the lowest daily rate of any open Porsche we keep here. Every 911 cabriolet we base in San Diego starts at $595. If the booking is a couple, a coast road and a sunset, this is the car that does it for the least, with a naturally aspirated flat-six that none of our turbocharged 911s can offer.
This is the Boxster S, the mid-engined 2-seat roadster with the 3.4 liter naturally aspirated flat-six, 315 hp, a PDK dual-clutch, rear-wheel drive and a fabric roof with a glass rear window. This car is a custom build. The front bumper is a deeper aero piece with large open intakes, the hood carries a vent, a carbon ducktail wing sits on the rear deck and the steering wheel is wrapped in alcantara with a yellow marker at the top. It is agate grey over a black alcantara cabin, on grey 5-spoke wheels. 2 seats, 2 doors, a trunk at each end, the engine in the middle under a service hatch with no engine cover to open.
