Driving to Hotel del Coronado in an Exotic Car

Use the valet off Avenida del Sol, about 15 minutes from San Diego Airport. A white Rolls Royce Cullinan or Ghost fits the 1888 hotel best.

The best exotic car for Hotel del Coronado is a white Rolls Royce Cullinan. The door to use is the main entrance off Avenida del Sol. Valet for a day visit costs $49 for the first 2 hours. The hotel puts the drive from San Diego International Airport at about 15 minutes. You cross the bridge, roll down Orange Avenue, and hand the key to the valet under the red roofs.

The Drive From San Diego Airport to the Del

If you fly in, the trip starts at San Diego Airport. The car can be waiting at the curb outside arrivals, so the drive is the first thing you do in town. The hotel's own directions send you down Interstate 5 South to exit 14A. That exit is Route 75 South to Coronado.

Route 75 takes you over the Coronado Bridge. The bridge climbs high over the bay with water on both sides. In the Cullinan you sit high and look down the long hood at the Spirit of Ecstasy. The V12 stays quiet at a cruise, so the bridge is the loudest part of the drive.

After the bridge you go straight onto Third Street and then turn left onto Orange Avenue. Orange Avenue is the main street of Coronado, with low shops and slow traffic. You follow it for about 2 miles, and the hotel comes up on the right. Diners at the cafe tables watch a white Rolls Royce roll past at the same slow pace as everyone else.

Where the Valet Stand Is

The valet stand is on the south side of the hotel. From Orange Avenue you keep going south to Avenida del Sol, where a large hotel sign stands on the right. You turn right on Avenida del Sol and then take an immediate right into the main entrance. That is the drive where check-ins, drop-offs and valet all happen.

Here are the parking numbers from the hotel's site.

  • Day valet is $49 for the first 2 hours.
  • Each extra hour of day valet is $17.
  • The day maximum for valet is $100.
  • Overnight valet is $79 per night.
  • Self-parking for a day is $39 for the first 2 hours.
  • Overnight self-parking is $59 per night.

The self-parking garage sits on the north side off R.H. Dana Place, and its clearance is 7 feet 2 inches. For a day visit in a Rolls Royce, the valet is the simpler call. You step out at the front of the building instead of in a garage.

The Cullinan kneels about 40mm when you open the door, so getting out in a dress or a suit is easy. The valet opens your door and takes the key from your hand. Guests at the Shore House villas use their own valet entrance, which sits just off the main driveway on the left. Beach Village guests arrive from the north off R.H. Dana Place.

Picking the Exotic Car for Hotel del Coronado

The Del is a white wooden Victorian hotel that opened in 1888 on 28 acres of beachfront. Red turrets stand on top of the main building. A long, formal car fits that building better than a low, wedge-shaped one, so the Rolls Royce is the first pick here.

The white Rolls Royce Cullinan rents for $1,495 a day. It carries a $2,000 deposit, which is a hold on your card and not a charge. It has a 6.75 liter twin-turbo V12 and seats five. Open the coach doors at the valet and the purple leather inside shows against the white paint. At night the starlight headliner glows over the back seat.

The white Rolls Royce Ghost is the sedan version of the same idea. It rents for $995 a day with a $1,000 deposit. The black grille and black wheels give the white car a hard outline in the beach light. The steering is light enough to turn with two fingers through the slow traffic on Orange Avenue.

The white G-Wagon AMG G63 rents for $595 a day with a $1,500 deposit. It seats five and has a 577 horsepower V8. The tall, square body holds a family and their beach bags and still looks right at the front door.

The white Lamborghini Urus rents for $995 a day with a $2,000 deposit. It has 641 horsepower and reaches 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. In Strada mode it runs quiet through town. Take it if the bridge is the part of the day you care about most.

Every one of these cars includes 100 miles a day. The round trip from SAN to the Del uses a small part of that.

What Is Inside the Del

The hotel lists several places to eat and drink on the property. Veranda serves its meals outdoors, and Serea serves sustainable seafood. Nobu Del Coronado brings the Japanese restaurant group to the island. The Sun Deck looks out over the ocean. Babcock + Story Bar is the hotel's original bar from 1888. Tables at the restaurants book through OpenTable from the hotel's dining page.

Dinner is the second time the car matters. You leave the Cullinan with the valet at 7 and walk through the lobby to the water. When you come back out, the car is pulled up and running at the front of the drive. Other guests walking out at the same time watch you get in and pull away.

The Calendar at the Del

The Del runs a calendar of seasonal events that you book through the hotel. Here is what the hotel lists for the months ahead.

  • Halloween brings the Ghost Roast beach bonfire and the Haunted Happenings Tour.
  • Thanksgiving Dinner is served in the Crown & Coronet room.
  • Christmas Eve Dinner and Christmas Day Brunch are also in the Crown & Coronet.
  • Victorian Tea is served in the Crown Room.
  • The Laundry hosts a New Year's Eve party.

A week or two of lead time covers most dates for the car. Holiday weekends are the first dates to go, so book those earlier than the rest. On Christmas Eve, a white Ghost parked in front of the white hotel is the photo your family will keep.

Parking Overnight on Coronado

If you stay the night, the car goes to the valet or the hotel garage and never stays on the street. Overnight valet at the Del is $79 a night. The car can also be delivered straight to the hotel, and the delivery fee is quoted by address when you book.

Some guests would rather ride in the back than drive. Chauffeur service is available on request for the Rolls Royces. That suits a wedding at the hotel, when the couple wants to step out of the back seat at the front door.

Before You Book

To rent any of these cars you need to be 18 or older with a valid driver's license. You also need proof of full coverage insurance in your own name. A larger deposit may apply if you are under 25.

If you plan to keep driving after the Del, the rest of the county is close. La Jolla is a short run up the coast, and the drive along the cliffs suits the Urus or the G63. Just keep an eye on the 100 miles a day.

At the Del, a white Rolls Royce matches the building better than any other car. Use the Avenida del Sol entrance, let the valet take it, and walk in through the front.
