Why the two Maserati rental prices sit $900 apart

The gap comes from what each car is under the skin. The Levante S is an SUV built around a 3.0 liter twin turbo V6 with 424 horsepower. The MC20 is a mid engine supercar built around a carbon fiber tub, meaning the whole passenger cell is one molded piece of carbon. Its own 3.0 liter V6 makes 621 horsepower.

Those two engines share a size and almost nothing else. The MC20 runs the Nettuno, a V6 Maserati designs and builds itself. It uses pre chamber ignition, a trick borrowed from Formula One where a small chamber fires first and sends jets of flame into the main one. The result is an engine that revs like it has two more cylinders than it does.

You hear the difference long before you understand it, because the Levante sits quiet until you press Sport and the exhaust valves open. The MC20 gives you turbo whistle right behind your head, loud enough on a lift off the throttle to make a passenger laugh. One car makes an entrance at the curb. The other one makes the drive the event.

What $1,295 a day buys in the MC20

At $1,295 a day you get the only MC20 we own, a 2023 car in pearl white over a black and blue cabin. Sixty comes up in 2.9 seconds through the rear wheels alone. Top speed is 202 mph, though no road you'll drive asks for it.

Most of that price is paid for rarity. Park a Ferrari outside Nobu in Malibu and everyone on the patio knows exactly what it is. Park the MC20 there, lift the butterfly doors, and a different thing happens. Other car people walk over, because most of them have never seen one up close. The pale paint is what lets the smooth bodywork show at all, and the blue trim inside only reads once a door is open in daylight.

The car is based in Westlake Village rather than with the main Los Angeles fleet, which puts the Malibu canyons close by. Take it up from Pacific Coast Highway and the steering answers as fast as the engine does, and the car settles into corners instead of fighting them. The ride stays supple over broken pavement, which is the part nobody expects from a car this quick.

The honest limit is space. Two seats, a small front trunk, and a rear compartment behind the engine that runs hot after a drive. It holds one weekend bag each and not much more.

Black hides the height of the SUV and makes the shape read as long and low. The red cabin shows through the frameless glass the second a door swings open. Pull under the porte-cochere of a hotel in Beverly Hills at dusk and that's the frame the valet sees first. Then the three portholes behind the front wheel catch the light, and anyone who knows the badge knows the car.

The Levante does a job the MC20 can't. It has five real seats and a 580 liter trunk behind them. That makes it the Maserati for a wedding party, a birthday dinner for four, or a weekend with luggage. On a run up Mulholland Drive, press Sport twice and the air suspension firms up. It holds the body flat through the tighter bends, and the rear biased all wheel drive pushes the car out of each corner.

The Maserati rental cost over a weekend or a week

One or two days are at the full daily rate. From the third day the discount is automatic, and it comes from length, not from asking. Three to 4 days take 10% off, 5 to 6 days take 15%, and 7 to 13 days take 20%. Longer rentals keep stepping down to 50% off at 28 days. Here's what that does to each car.

Book the MC20 for 28 days and the Maserati daily rental price falls to $647.50. Very few people book it that long, but the math is there if you want it.

How much does it cost to rent a Maserati next to a Ferrari or a Porsche

Most people who look at the MC20 also look at a Ferrari 296 GTB, and most people who look at the Levante also look at a Porsche Macan. The numbers line up closer than you'd guess.

Our white Ferrari 296 GTB is $1,345 a day, only $50 more than the MC20. It hits 60 in the same 2.9 seconds, with 819 horsepower from a hybrid V6. It can also leave a quiet street in Newport Beach on electric power alone before the engine wakes up. The Ferrari badge gets recognized on sight by almost everyone. The MC20 gets recognized by fewer people, and they're usually the ones who care most.

Our black Porsche Macan is $395 a day, the same rate as the Levante S. The Macan has 261 horsepower and reaches 60 in 6.0 seconds. The Levante has 424 horsepower and gets there a full second sooner. Both seat five adults. The Macan corners like a hot hatch and looks like a sensible daily car in a Laguna Beach driveway. The Levante looks like an occasion and sounds like one once the valves open.

Deposits, miles, and the insurance call

A security deposit is a hold on your card, not a charge, and we release it once the car comes back in the condition it left. The Levante S holds $1,000 and the MC20 holds $2,000, which is double the $1,000 on the Ferrari 296 GTB. If you're under 25, the deposit may be larger.

Miles pool across the rental, so three days give you 300. Past that, the Levante bills $3 a mile and the MC20 bills $5. Run 60 miles over in the MC20 and that's $300 on top of the rate. The same overage in the Levante is $180. If you know the trip runs long, tell us at booking and the miles get priced in ahead of time.

Insurance isn't part of the rate, and we don't sell it. Your own policy has to extend comprehensive and collision to a rental car that isn't on it. That's called non-owner vehicle coverage, and it can't carry an exotic exclusion or a cap that rules the car out. Before you get the keys, we call your carrier on a recorded line to confirm it. The rest of the list is short, 18 or older, a valid license, and full coverage in your own name.
