Road trip car rental in Southern California means a grand tourer, a 911 or an AWD SUV for a loop that starts and ends here, from Los Angeles and Orange County down to San Diego and out to Joshua Tree and Big Bear. This road trip car rental page is for the visitor who flew into LAX for the California drive, the couple upgrading a weekend in Ojai or Santa Ynez, and the enthusiast who already knows which road he wants. The car is the event, and what you are paying for is the first open stretch after the freeway ends.

What the Car Does on a Road Trip

The car earns its keep in 3 places. The first is the open stretch, PCH past Pepperdine at 8 am with the ocean on your left, Highway 74 climbing out of Palm Desert, Montezuma Grade dropping into Borrego Springs. The top goes down here and the passenger starts filming. The second is the turnout, El Matador, Point Mugu, Keys View, Dantes View. That is the photo that gets posted. The third is the hotel driveway, the long tree-lined approach at Ojai Valley Inn, the gravel outside a Big Bear cabin. Other guests look up. A Bentley Continental GTC does all 3 with the roof down and 4 real seats. A Porsche 911 Carrera does the coast in the morning and the canyon before breakfast, which is why it is the default answer to every Pacific Coast Highway car rental question.

Which Cars Work for Road Trips

The grand tourers are the cars for road trip duty. The Continental GTC, Aston Martin DB12 Volante, Ferrari Roma, Ferrari Portofino, McLaren GT and Mercedes-Benz AMG GT have a real seat for 8 hours, a trunk that takes 2 soft bags and a nose that clears a motel driveway. The 911 is the enthusiast's version of the same idea, and the 911 GT3 is the car for the one road you have been thinking about for years, Palomar or Angeles Crest. The Porsche 718 Boxster is the entry point, and people have done 900 miles of SoCal in one. The Lamborghini Huracan and McLaren 720S are canyon-day cars, not 3-day cars. One carry-on in the frunk, a low nose, a fuel stop every couple of hours. Rent one for the Saturday you run Ortega or the Malibu canyons. For 3 or 4 people, or any mountain from December to March, the Mercedes-Benz G63, Lamborghini Urus, Range Rover, Land Rover Defender and Rolls Royce Cullinan are the list. An SUV rental for road trip weekends in the mountains is the one case where the car people photograph is also the car that climbs Highway 18 in a storm. A convertible is a season, not a car. People type convertible rental Los Angeles, and the right answer is a month. Coast in late April, May, September and October. Desert from October to April. Idyllwild in July, when the valley floor is too hot for it.

Where a Road Trip Car Rental Goes in Southern California

In Los Angeles the coast runs from the Santa Monica tunnel to Point Mugu and on to the Rincon, and the canyons start at Latigo. Orange County gives you Santiago Canyon out of Cook's Corner and Ortega Highway inland, with Temecula as the wine stop at the far end. San Diego owns the back-country loop, Palomar Mountain to Julian to Borrego Springs, and Sunrise Highway above Mount Laguna. From the desert, Palms to Pines climbs to Idyllwild and Joshua Tree sits 45 minutes north. The Inland Empire is Rim of the World up to Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear, and Glendora Mountain Road for the early run. Coastal highways are slow, so presence beats pace. Canyon roads are the car's event, so go early on a weekday and name the hour, never the speed. Wine roads are a parked-car occasion in front of a barn. Mountain grades are where the SUV is both the photo and the plan.

When to Book and How the Trip Runs

Book 2 to 4 weeks out and earlier for the holiday weeks, the festival weekends in April and the clear spring and fall weekends on the coast, when the convertibles go first. The rental is almost never 1 day. People leave Friday afternoon and come back Sunday evening, so 3 or 4 days is the normal shape and a Central Coast or Death Valley loop runs 3 nights, which is why the multi-day ladder matters here. 3 to 4 days is 10% off, 5 to 6 days 15%, 7 to 13 days 20%, 14 to 20 days 30%, 21 to 27 days 40% and 28+ days 50%. The car reaches you at your hotel near the airport, your house in Irvine, quoted by address, or you pick it up in Orange County. Included daily mileage varies by car, and a multi-day trip is quoted with the route in mind, so tell us the loop and the quote is built for it rather than a surprise at the handback.

The 250 Mile Rule and the Routes That Fit

Every car stays within 250 miles of Orange County, stays in California and comes back to where it started, so the trip is a loop, not a line. PCH past Pepperdine and on to Santa Barbara, with Ojai or Montecito as the overnight. The 154 over Cold Spring Arch Bridge to Los Olivos and Santa Ynez, then Foxen Canyon between the vineyards. North to Paso Robles and 46 West to Cambria, where Highway 1 runs up to Ragged Point before you turn around. The Palomar, Julian and Borrego loop in a day. Palms to Pines to Idyllwild. Rim of the World to Big Bear. Joshua Tree from the desert side. Death Valley in season, October to April, by way of Lone Pine and the Alabama Hills. Highway 1 north of Ragged Point sits past the limit and has been closed as often as open. Anything across the state line is out, including the casino run people pair with the desert, and so are the Sierra ski towns and the national parks north of Lone Pine. The loops above cover the same kind of ground, and most of them end at a hotel with a long driveway and a valet who has seen the car coming.

Tell us the dates, the route and how many of you are going, and we come back with the cars that fit the loop and the month. The open stretch is waiting at the end of the on-ramp.

Where It Happens

Road Trips Across Southern California

Los Angeles skyline, exotic car rental in Los Angeles

Los Angeles

Where to Go
Pacific Coast Highway
Angeles Crest Highway
Ojai Valley Inn

In Los Angeles the road trip starts where the freeway ends, on PCH at the Santa Monica tunnel with the ocean on your left all the way past Pepperdine to Point Dume. Go at 8 am, before the crawl back fills Malibu after 3 pm. The canyon people turn inland on Latigo or run Angeles Crest to Newcomb's Ranch. A Continental GTC owns the coast, a 718 owns the canyons.

Orange County coastline, exotic car rental in Orange County

Orange County

Where to Go
Ortega Highway
Santiago Canyon
Crystal Cove

In Orange County the coast is the slow half and Ortega Highway is the driver's half. PCH from Newport Beach through Laguna Beach to Dana Point is a view, not a run, with about 75 lights between you and San Clemente. Ortega climbs inland early, before the line of cars builds behind you. A Roma or a DB12 Volante at a touring pace fits both halves, and the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel porte cochere is where the day ends.

San Diego waterfront, exotic car rental in San Diego

San Diego

Where to Go
Palomar Mountain
Montezuma Grade
Sunrise Highway

In San Diego the road trip is the back-country loop, Palomar Mountain to Julian, down Montezuma Grade into Borrego Springs and home through Shelter Valley. Palomar's South Grade packs over 20 hairpins into 7 miles with no guardrail and a patrol overhead, so this is the GT3's road, run before 9 am. Lunch is the Red Ocotillo in Borrego. The coast version is the 101 from La Jolla to Oceanside in a Portofino with the top down.

Palm Springs desert, exotic car rental in Palm Springs

Palm Springs

Where to Go
Palms to Pines
Keys View
Pioneertown

From Palm Springs the road trip climbs. Highway 74 leaves Palm Desert in palms and reaches Idyllwild in pines 62 miles later, with gas in 4 towns and no signal. Joshua Tree is 45 minutes the other way, Park Boulevard to Keys View, then dinner at Pappy and Harriet's in Pioneertown with the car out front at golden hour. October to April the top goes down. A Huracan Spyder for 2, a Urus when it is 4 of you.

Inland Empire landscape, exotic car rental in the Inland Empire

Inland Empire

Where to Go
Rim of the World
Big Bear Lake
Glendora Mountain Road

In the Inland Empire the road trip goes up. Rim of the World, Highway 18, climbs out of San Bernardino past basin overlooks to Lake Arrowhead and on to Big Bear at 6,750 feet, with chain control in winter storms. The photo here is a G63 or Defender in front of an A-frame cabin in snow, and in a storm the AWD SUV is the only exotic that makes the hill. Glendora Mountain Road is the early canyon add.
