How It Drives
The Boxster is mid-engined, which means the mass sits between the axles rather than behind the rear one, and the car turns with a precision even a 911 on our row cannot quite match. 300 horsepower from a 2.0 litre turbo flat four and sixty in 4.7 seconds sounds modest until you are on Ortega Highway with corners coming one after another, and you realise how little of a faster car you would actually be using. The steering is the reason to book it, the most communicative system in our fleet, and with the roof down at legal speed on Santiago Canyon Road it is a better day out than most things costing three times as much.
How It Photographs
Black with a white interior is a deliberate contrast, and the roof is what lets you use it. Down, the cabin becomes part of the exterior shot rather than something hidden behind glass, and the white leather reads hard against the black body from any angle above the beltline. Shoot it from slightly high with the roof stowed, along Newport Coast Drive on the climb toward Pelican Hill, to get the whole cabin and the coastline in one frame. Black paint wants late light or shade. This is the lowest-priced car in our Porsche fleet and one of the most photogenic with the top down.
Why This One
This is the lowest-priced car in our entire fleet and the only mid-engine roadster we own. Nothing else we keep puts the engine between the axles with the roof down, and nothing else gives you this much steering feel for under three hundred a day. Book it when the road along the coast or through Ortega Highway is the whole plan and the budget is real. The white cabin against black bodywork with the top stowed is also the best value photograph we can offer anywhere in our fleet.

This is the 718 Boxster, black with a white interior, the mid-engine roadster at the base of our Porsche range. A 2.0 litre turbo flat four, mounted behind the seats, makes 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft, sent to the rear wheels only. Standard on this trim: a fabric roof that opens or closes in about nine seconds at speeds up to 31 mph, storage at both ends of the car with no engine compartment to open up front, 19-inch wheels, and a centre analogue tachometer in front of the driver. Two seats, two doors, and the only mid-engine car we keep with the roof down as an option.
