The white Audi R8 V10 Spyder with the red diamond-quilted interior is based in Los Angeles. It is the supercar for the person who wants the V10 and the night out without the hostility a louder badge brings, the kind of car strangers wave at rather than glare at. Kids call it the Iron Man car. We bring it to you anywhere in Los Angeles, Orange County and the Inland Empire.
The 5.2L V10 sits behind your head with no turbos, so the throttle answers the moment you touch it. Thumb the red start button on the wheel and it catches with a bark, then settles into a busy mechanical idle you feel through the seat. In comfort mode the 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch shuffles gently through traffic and the steering is light, so the first mile is as easy as a sedan. The engine lives in its top 3,000 rpm. Fold the roof, about 20 seconds, and the climb to 8,250 rpm comes straight into the cabin, with shotgun pops on the overrun when you lift. 540 hp through quattro all-wheel drive means it simply grips. Take it along the Sunset Strip at night, then out on Pacific Coast Highway toward Malibu with the roof down.
White over red is the loudest R8 pairing, and roof down the red seats sit as a block of colour inside the white body. In direct sun the white paint flares and loses the sideblade shape, so shoot it at dusk or at night, as these photos were, with the downtown Los Angeles skyline lit behind it. Open shade shows the silver 5-spoke wheels and the vents on the rear deck. The frame to take is the rear three-quarter at dusk with the red tail light bar on. The close detail is the diamond-quilted seat from above. Shoot it on the hill above downtown with the skyline behind, or inside a parking structure with the lights on.
We run 4 R8s and this is the only one with a red interior under an open roof. The other Spyder is white over black in Orange County at $795, and the 2 coupes are black on black in Orange County and grey over red in San Diego. If you want the roof down and the red seats in the same frame, with the car already in Los Angeles, this is the one. It costs $895 a day, $100 more than the Orange County Spyder, and the interior is why.
This is the standard V10 Spyder, 540 hp from the 5.2L naturally aspirated V10, the 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch and quattro all-wheel drive. The body is white with a black fabric roof and silver 5-spoke wheels. Inside it is red leather with diamond-quilted sport seats, red door panels, carbon fibre trim on the centre console and around the gear selector, and the 12.3 inch Virtual Cockpit in front of the driver with no centre screen. The start button and drive select sit on the steering wheel. The roof folds in about 20 seconds at up to 31 mph, and the small rear window drops on its own with the roof up.
