This is the full-size Range Rover, the car for the arrival that has to be read correctly by a doorman, a client and a wedding photographer at once, and the light interior is the one that photographs. How It Drives
Walk up and the door handles slide out of the bodywork while the car drops on its air springs to meet you. You sit in what Land Rover has called the Command Driving Position since the first Range Rover, high over a flat hood, and the 3.0L straight-6 starts to a hum you have to listen for. The 395 hp arrives as a firm, silent shove, 0 to 60 in about 5.3 seconds, with the 8-speed never announcing a shift. At parking speed the rear wheels steer opposite to the fronts, so this long car U-turns on a Beverly Hills side street. Take it along Sunset Boulevard from the Beverly Hills Hotel west to the Bel Air gates, hands still, and it tracks straight with almost no correction. Nobody looks twice, which is the job.
How It Photographs
Champagne over ivory is the lightest pairing we have on a Range Rover, and the black roof and black 22-inch wheels frame it. In direct sun the paint goes pale gold and the flush bodywork shows its single long crease, so shoot the profile at midday. In open shade it cools to silver and the ivory cabin becomes the brightest thing, so open a door then. After dark it reads warm under tungsten and the ivory seats glow through the glass. Take the rear three-quarter with the split tailgate and the black wheel. Close detail, the ivory steering wheel. Shoot it at the Waldorf Astoria valet on Wilshire, or on Orange Grove Boulevard in Pasadena.
Why This One
This is the only full-size Range Rover we base in Los Angeles and the only champagne one we run. Our other Range Rover in Los Angeles is the blue Sport with the tan interior at $695 a day, the one you drive. This HSE at $795 a day is the one you are driven in, with the longer body, all-wheel steering, the ivory cabin and chauffeur service available on request. The black SE in Orange County at $595 is the discreet version. This is the one in the wedding photos.
