How It Drives
The CS is what BMW builds when it wants to sharpen an M3 rather than make it bigger. 543 horsepower from the same twin turbo straight six, less weight, stiffer mounts, and a tune that makes the whole car feel more alert from the first input. Sixty comes in 3.2 seconds with all wheel drive underneath it. What you notice first is not the extra power, it is the reduced slack. Steering responses happen sooner and the damping is firmer without turning brittle. Run it out Ortega Highway toward Lake Elsinore and the titanium exhaust gets noticeably harder edged at the top end. It is a limited production car and it feels like one from the driver's seat.
How It Photographs
White with a black and red interior on a CS gives you the cleanest exterior canvas in the M range plus the cabin details that mark it out as the rare one. The red accents and the darker exterior trim are the giveaways, so shoot them deliberately rather than treating this as another white M3. Newport Coast Drive at midday is where the white holds the shape of the bodywork best, better than any darker colour would manage in that light, and the carbon detailing on the hood reads as texture against it. This is the M3 to book when the person looking at the photograph should be able to tell it is not the standard one.
Why This One
The only limited production M car in our fleet, and the only M3 CS based in Orange County. Our Los Angeles CS is finished the same in white but with a plain black cabin, and everything else on our BMW row is a standard M3 Competition, M5 or M8 that BMW built in volume. This one has more power, less weight, firmer mounts and a production run that ended. If the reason for the booking is that it is not the version everybody can order, and you want it out of Orange County rather than Los Angeles, this is the one. It is also the quickest four door on our BMW row at 3.2 seconds.
